For anybody wishing to install Flatpress for their .edu domain, here's how:

You will need BitZipper (download the free 30-day trial) and FileZilla if you do not already have them.

Download flatpress-0.909-arioso.tar.bz2 from Browse FlatPress Files on SourceForge.net and unpack the .bz2 folder using BitZipper. You will now have a folder on your PC called Flatpress, containing 8 folders and 15 files.

Log in to the yourdomain.college.edu.pe server using Filezilla and the info already provided by Paul. On the right side (RHS) you will see an unnamed folder containing cgi-bin folder. Click on the unnamed folder so that cgi-bin is shown in the lower pane. Now drag and drop all 8 folders and 15 files from your PC (LHS) to the lower pane RHS. It will take a few minutes for these files to load. Right click on the fp-content folder and change the file attributes to 755 (they are probably set at 755 but check anyway).

Go to yourdomain.college.edu.pe and you will be taken to the admin set up page - just follow the on-screen instructions.

Nice going ,Keith. They can also unpack or unzip the download using ZipGenius which is free and can unzip anything or convert files like 7zip via right click, to regular zip for unzipping/unpacking.Now after you add the plug-in instructions perhaps you can figur out how to change themes more easily. The res:themes [FlatPress Wiki] site as given in the thread ,has plenty of themes to choose from or Cathy can view the source files, click the css links , and copy/change/ and paste into her own theme version.

    Thanks Bill.

I will try out ZipGenius, since BitZipper is free trial only (and has annoying 'purchase now' pop-ups).

There is another set of plugins that I will add in the next day or so. However, I haven't been able to figure out how to change the theme. I downloaded a theme file then uploaded to the server, to no avail. I was thinking that maybe the theme I chose wouldn't work on the latest version of Flatpress. I'll have another go but, to be honest, the default theme is fine for the purpose of a 'link bait' site.

    Cheers - Keith

Just uploading the theme is insufficient.Compare the two theme folder contents.Go to your admin page for flatpress again and see if there is a choose theme option.Otherwise you will need to hack your own site, exchange the theme folder contents, and go into the theme's functions.php file and change the names of the "called-on" files to the names in the new theme.
If you are going to attempt this then rename the original theme folder in case you have to revert back to it if you mess up.

    Thanks Bill!

I will do what you suggest. I've got a feeling that a hack may be required and, if so, will give it a go. I like experimenting

Don't forget to do a backup, first. You could also just back up the css files and play with them.If you exchange banner headers then give it the original banner name and dimensions.

Yep, thanks for the heads up Bill

I have winzip so tried to unzip with that and could not as it said full file path was required

I then tried with genius but that just upset my computer and I had to do a restore from a previous day. The upset symptoms were
    • 1 Dr Watson clagged up and had to close
    • 2 windows explorer clagged up and could not respond
    • 3 the mouse could not do anything if I clicked anywhere
So I just did a reset and went into safe mode to do a restore.
Is there a way to change the file type before it is downloaded?
    best wishes

Yikes I'm sorry you experienced these problems Vince, and hope your machine is OK now.

Unfortunately there is no way of changing the format of the download file. However, if you like, I can email you the unzipped files and folders (I think - as long as they are not too large). They are on my laptop at home and I can send them when I finish work say in about 9-1/2 hours time.

I would need your email address.

I downloaded the .tar.bzip for flatpress and used Zip Genius without a hitch.
Did you have bzip and tar as two of the options in the Zip Genius actions ?
Do you have the correct Zip Genius version for your OS whether Windows,MAC or Linux?
And handling tar-balls on Windows can hang Explorer and the OS.A hard reboot would have resolved the problem

The whole unzipped and de-tared folder is only 1.48 MB. So Keith can send all the files in 2 e-mails.

    Hi Keith
Thanks for the offer I will pm you with my e-mail address but first I will try something that is going through my head. Don't be sorry about my system it is part of my learning curve and will ultimately benefit us all as I learn to conquer all the challenges (like I spelt conquer with 2 c's in it until the spell checker prompted me)
What is going through my head is to see if I can download the individual files myself from the main download site and although may take a lot longer it would give me some more experience with downloading stuff.
    best wishes

Fair enough Vince - that's the sort of approach I adopt myself...trial and error and such - a great way to learn.

    Hi Bill
Yes I had the correct version to suit my OS and it did unload the files but it was within moments of doing so that the gremlins took over and prevented me from doing anything else
with it. I was amazed at how many file extensions exist as I saw them revealed in the write up for the program. Although I am a bit techie I don't always understand all the words that go with the techie stuff as my mind works a bit nay a lot different from what may be considered normal by others.
Thanks for your input to my learning curve
    it is much appreciated.
    best wishes

PS Bill you make a splendid Mod

Great no problems with your installation directions.

    Themes

    Upload additional themes into the
    fp-interface/themes directory

    Haven't got to plugins yet.

Not sure if this fits here but if not I am certain someone will let me know. I just setup my .edu site but the problem is the URL is not just the site name. See the link Network Marketing instead of someone being able to just put in the URL they have to add /flatpress. Apparently I did not install it at the root level. What is the easiest way to correct this and what was my mistake that caused me to do this?

Hope someone can share with me the fix.

    thank you!

These edu.pe sites are probably on a Linux server so just delete the Flatpress folder and start over. You can try to just move it into the root directly or copy it there and delete the original,if it lets you. Filezilla is a little slow with delete commands on occasion. It shows deleted and when you try to close Filezilla it says operations are not completed. The server may have been busy.Wait 10 minutes and close Filezilla anyways. Then start over, upload the Flatpress files to the root as shown by Keith.
Do not drag the whole folder but 8 smaller folders and 15 files.

I'm experiencing a tough time getting the flatpress installed.
I've been through it 11 times, still no luck.
I'm not new to this, but this is the first time I've not been able to overcome the problem.
Here's all I can come up with: Index of /
