Difference between category & sub domain 2008/03/27 17:11
Hi

Recently I host my web (and a domain name as well) through BlueHost using Wordpress web design. Wordpress enables us to separate topics into different categories. At the same time, BlueHost also allows us to create sub domains too (eg ABC.yourwebsite.com), may I know what is the difference between category and sub domain?

It sounds to me they serve the same purpose - to create sub topics. Or there are different usage between the two features? I hope to fully utilise these two features if they do create differences in the outlook of your web.

Thanks

They couldn't be further from each other. One stores information in a database, while the other stores webpages (or other) on a web server.

The information that WordPress stores in a database has nothing to do with the structure of your website or how you organize website/s on your server.

subdomain is something like abc.domainname.com. Apart from www.domainname.com, you can build a blog under blog.domainname.com.

Categories in wordpress is like grouping your posts to different topics.

Wordpress is resided in your web server.

I think of categories as "topics" and subdomains as "features."

The features could be a forum, a blog, a store, etc.
