Self Hosted Wordpress is so complex! 2007/01/14 15:37
Got quite a surprise today.

Managed to get my Wordpress installed in my host server, but realized that it doesn't have many of the user friendly stuff Wordpress.com offers.

For example, to modify the right sidebar you just have to go to the admin area and drag and drop

Self hosted? All I see is a "Theme Editor" and LINES and LINES of code...

Just managed to figure out how to change the header image...I think i have to spend quite some time on this...

It does have a little learning curve on it.

What I did was save a copy of the sidebar file in case I screw something up, then I started changing things to see what worked, And If I changed something I wasn't supposed to, I could restore with my original.

There are some programmers here that can help, and the Wordpress forums are a lot of help also.

KaiWei -

I share your pain! I worked on setting up a Wordpress blog for a client of mine, and compared to Blogger, it was incredibly complicated. It's perfect, if you're a heavy-duty PHP programmer who specializes in it, but if you're an infrequent user, the learning curve can be intense.

As troubling as Blogger can be, it's still the easiest solution I've found -- and you can publish it to your own domain with FTP, so you don't have to be held up by slow Blogger servers.

Good luck!

If you really get stuck with it or on something related to wordpress - please let me know and I can help. I've become quite familiar with it myself...there are also a ton of plugins you can upload. You are right though in stating that it not designed fully loaded with them. That is why I've been making most of my recent sites Joomla sites because Joomla's core functions are more advanced and have more features already built in (makes things easier for me) - although the learning curve is steep too.

Holly, I received my completed notification from you for the Cheekyo website and I am so confused. What am I suppose to do with it??? I'm not sure how to approach it or what any of it really means or how top fix or change things so I've just left it sit there the way you sent it to me. I know you mentioned that you couldn't necessarily assist me direct with the site but I could go on to the forum and find help but all I find is other people asking how the Cheekyo free website service is and even though you made me one, I can't comment on how good I'm sure it is because I dont' know what to do with it. Sorry, I really am a Newbie at this.
