Subdomains vs Folders: Which is better? 2008/03/13 23:23
I finally opened my account with BlueHost! But now I've already got sort of a technical question about setting up additional sites.

I plan on creating a series different sites on different health topics, assigning each to their own subdomain on my single domain name. I figure this way I can avoid buying a whole string of separate domain names.

My question is, which is the better way to handle this? Should I refer to them as subdomains, such as: subject.website.com, or should I use folder names, such as: website.com/subject?

I've created one subdomain on BlueHost so far, and it seems to be accessed just as well whether you type it in as a subdomain or as a folder, so I'm a little confused now. I'm worried that it might be much better SEO wise to do this one way or the other.

Any advice? Seaching around elswhere on the web only got me more confused. Thanks in advance!

P.S. - Thanks again to Holly for your help in getting my template set up, even though I had to go and choose a little of a problem one!

This method works better for me: subject.website.com

First off, let me tell you that I am by no means even close to being an expert on SEO but I will give you my humble opinion.

I'm in the process of setting up an SBI! site where they walk you through setting it up. They use the folders method. You connect all of the folders together in tiers. Tier 1 being your homepage, tier 2 being a series of smaller niches within you main niche and tier 3 pages being a series of even smaller niches within the tier 2 niches. They don't suggest that you go any deeper than that though. I think the reasoning behind it is that each of your different pages has it's own keywords thus creating different entrance doors into your website thus creating more traffic.

There is a link in my signature to a free ebook called Affiliate Masters Course that explains the SBI! way of setting up a website.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong,
