Site Maps = Faster Traffic 2007/01/23 03:02
I just had a look and couldn't find anything related so here's a tip for everyone...

Spiders don't like to dig deep. In most cases a spider will make an initial "front page" pass over a site and index it but put a note to come back later and dig deeper.

The second time the spider comes back to your site it'll go two to three levels deep and rarely more than that.

Putting this into practice to get the maximum number of pages spidered in the shortest time, the fastest method by FAR is to have a "Site Map" link on the FRONT page somewhere for the spider to index and it will then *fingers crossed* index the Site Map page which of course includes links to ALL pages in your site.

More pages indexed on an engine = more likely hits, especially if your KWD and recurrence are sweet. More likely hits = more potential buyers and if your copy is good, you'll convert more and quicker.

I never ever create a site without a SiteMap unless the customer really doesn't want one and I'd recommend doing that to anyone with a new site!

Absolutely right, I've had all site pages indexed on a new site on Googlebot's first pass when I've had a site map.

Also, make sure you continue to regularly add content. If Googlebot finds new content each time it spiders your site it very quickly starts to reduce the interval between visits, which means your new content shows up in the search engines sooner.

Its important to note there are a few types of sitemaps. You can create one from scratch for example that Google may find and Spider and that your users can read as navigation.

OR you can create a google XML sitemap that is like a direct link to assure google spiders your pages. You can setup a google sitemap account here target="_blank">https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=sitemaps&nui=1&continue=https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/siteoverview%3Fhl%3Den&hl=en

There is a cool wordpress plugin to generate the XML:http://www.arnebrachhold.de/2005/06/05/google-sitemaps-generator-v2-final target="_blank">

Google XML is a more effective way to assure google catches all of your pages.

Thanks-

Thanks Kerry, and for anyone who has xSitePro, it can automatically create Google XML sitemaps as well as standard nav sitemaps and alphabetically arranged sitemaps at the click of a button.

if you have a google sitemap in XML format there is a tools that will create a text verion of the file. You can submit this text version to Yahoo.

the link to the download site is Yahoo Site Map Tool.

After uploading the script you may need to contact your host to help with setting up a cron job to schedule a re-write of the site map file.
