Need help pls 2007/08/05 03:07
Hi , I have two questions I am confused on.
1. Sitemap- I dont think i have a site map on my website, but my pages are indexed in the SEO's. Does that mean I do have a site map or would my pages be ranked better if i had a site map? Where exactly do I place a site map file if i created one? Just anywhere like under the "root" directly?

2. Robot.txt I think it is called. Similar question here. I dont see this file in my website but I seem to have my web pages indexed in SE's. Where would i lok for this file? If it isnt there do i just place one anywhere?

I may not be understanding what either of these files are so my questions may be confusing.

thank you
stan

Hi stan,

I think I can help you on this:

1.) There are two versions of a sitemap that you can add to your page. One version is a simple html file where you display all links of your website (maybe ordered by category). The second version of a sitemap is a xml file that you need only for google. You can create such a file if not all your pages are indexed and you want them to be indexed. If all of your pages are indexed then you don't need to create a xml file.

2.) The robots.txt is only needed if you have pages of your website that sould not be crawled, for example a members only download area.

Hi Guido,

Thx for your prompt reply. Very much appreciated!
I just have one more item to clarify.
I dont see that a lot of my pages are indexed by Google, so
I think from what you said that I should then add a sitemap
file so they all will get indexed?
I think there were instructions in Holly Mann's ebook
on how to create this "sitemap" file so i'll follow that.
The only question I then have is where do I place this html file once it is created? Just load it into my website where all the other "http docs" type files are?

Thank you very much for the info- it is very helpful when
trudging through so much info and wondering what exactly does
one need to do!

Take care,
stan

Stan,

I think the fastest way to find out how many pages are indexed in google is to open up a free google webmasters account. There you can also submit your xml sitemap (you don't need a html sitemap if you don't have a huge website).

At your google webmasters account you will get instructions on how to create a xml sitemap. You then place that sitemap in your root directory, where your index file is located and enter the url to it into your google webmasters account.

If you want to create a html sitemap (is simply a list of links), then you can place it also in the root directory and link to it from your index page.

Regards

Guido
