usual practices?? 2006/11/07 05:29
I have just signed up with 2 affiliate programs and I was wondering if these practices are considered fair:

When clients go to the order page, their information is needed by the merchant to process the order, and that is ok. But then, the merchant targets them directly - potentially cutting you out of the next sale. I know we are supposed to collect their info too for a list but ??

The other affiliate program has a practice that I (not knowing much about this) do not think is fair at all. They send a coupon to the customer with the order to be used for the next order. All coupons redeemed are considered their referrals - not yours. Affiliates cannot offer the coupons. Does this seem right? Or am I missing something?

Just thought I'd ask...

Welcome to the world of affiliate marketing LOL. It depends on what they offer and will allow their affiliates to get in on. Some businesses will have cut and dry system where as you make a commission on a sale and what they do with that customer from then on is up to them.

You can contact some businesses and ask if they have codes for you to offer coupons. Some will, some won't.

Most products in Clickbank and others like it are just commission by referral an that's it. We as marketers come up with ways to capture their information or just keep sending referrals.

It is fair. It may not feel like it at times but when you have some traffic coming in and your list is building and your making sales it is suddenly very fair. LOL. It's at that point that you truly are exercising rule number six (6)... you just have to make sure you sprinkle a little of rule number three (3)into the process.

Thanks Merc,

Thumbs up for this, but what have you referred to when you say Rule 6 and then Rule 3.
Also I have one question, Is it legal to click on your affiliate link and then get a commission for buying a product.
I felt it is correct because then you are selling a product and you deserve a commission
[what was the aim of advertiser - to sell a product!].

But one of my friend lost his money when he clicked his own affiliate link and got the product.

Thanks Again

Thank you for the explanation. I really like that rule #6. I hope I can be soon into rule #3 a little more.

Hi Quark,

First I like to excuse my self for using the name "Merc" here I'm EBEfriend or my real name is "Dan". Merc is my name elswhere and I did it out of habit. Sorry for the confusion. I was shocked to see that you called me "Merc" until I looked at my post he he.

But when I refer to rules #6 and #3 I'm talking about the forum rules, right under the graphic at the top of the page

Other thing is, when it comes to affiliates purchasing with their affiliate links. Most people seem like they're on the fence about it. Some actually use it to get more sales by telling you to do it and some do what happened to your friend. They make it so as and affiliate you can't have a commission through your own link. You must check with whomever you join and if they say nothing at all about it, I hate to say it but sometimes you just have to try and see what happens or if you really want to take it far email them... that's really taking it far though. I would say to use discretion like with Holly's program, I mean c'mon it's only about $19.95 how much do you want a squeeze someone for before it's almost not good practice.

I just joined a program yesterday and right in the affiliate join welcome instructions it said how you can save by using the affiliate link to get anything at a discount, so they promote it. I'm just as puzzled as you are about it. I know that if I have a product that is 34.95 or above and I'm giving a 50 to 75% I'd rather have the affiliate sale. Anything lower and I might as well be selling somone elses product anyway.

Hope this helps.

Dan

One of the things I try to keep in mind when choosing affiliate programs Ali, is to try and find some with recurring commissions. Which mean you get paid month after month for the same sale. Webhosting is a good one for this, or many other member sites where the buyer pays the same monthly fee to remain a member. This is why I like to pump Affilorama quite a bit, because for every member that signs in through me I make $21.00 a month for that one sale, for as long as they choose to be members. It's also a really great product too, so it feels good when your promoting something you believe in. Of course not all products you will market will be this way, but I'm gonna try and have a couple in there like that anyway. Just food for thought. Cheers Davin
