Hey JerDon and Sara,
Have you submitted your site to tons of site directories yet. If not then this should be your first step in getting a new site off the ground.
I own IBP and also SEO Elite, and also the full version of Directory Submitter. As if I need all three?? Don't ask!!
Anyways, this is very time consuming to do, and recently Guido put me on to a service which is called digixmas, and for 15US this will submit your site to over 1000 directories. Now, if you have ever completely done this by hand, trust me, pay the $15 and be done with it. It is so time consuming. Here is Guido's link

Personally, next would be finding as many High PR directories to submit your site into as well. For this I can use any of the programs that I have mentioned above and do it semi-automatically.
And next would be, your correct, submitting articles to article directories. Brad Callen has a fantastic new article submitter that will submit to 85 article directories for Free. I don't have a link handy, but I'm sure if you do a search for it, you will find it fast. The other programs like IBP etc. have this feature incorporated as well, but I tried out Brad's new one and prefer it now actually.
Again, very, very tedious and time consuming. You could also pay to have this done for you. A site called Isnare can do this for you for a reasonable cost and actually Holly has a service listed in her book as well that she uses.
One thing to not forget, is even if you are using submitters, make sure not to forget the top directories which include Ezine Articles, Go Articles and SearchWarp. Ezine Articles is the top of them all but it's an absolute must because of their high PR and also their high traffic.
If you can do 20 a week great, there is no golden number, but the more you do, then the more inbound links you will get, and also the more exposure. Always keep an eye on the directories Page Rank. Why submit to 100 directories with no PR, when you can submit to one with a good PR and gain just as much power in terms of SEO.
Work smarter, not harder.
Hope that helps,
Davin
