My Head is Spinning 2007/03/31 23:07
For some reason I have never been able to fully sort out my confusion on what "top level domain" is. Sounds stupid - it is. I googled it but it still doesn't fully make sense in this context ...

That is, when you read the legal rules to sign up for an affiliate program or something, and it says "your website must be a top level domain."

So what does that mean!

Is a blogger.com site a top-level domain? Does it have to be its own seperate website?

Lost and confused ...

"TLD Score: A TLD is a Top Level Domain. You know these as ".com" or ".net" and accompany ALL domain names. Certain TLD's are more popular and therefore worth more in the eyes of an investor with .COM being the current domain market ruler. After that, .NET and .ORG take second place. And finally, the many other TLD's are becoming more and more popular. A few key players to watch are .INFO, .NAME, and .BIZ. These names are upcoming superstars. Questions about this? Visit the forums."

I got this from leapfish.com;

Yes a top level domain is a full domain name like blogger.com. Those type affiliate programs typically require you to have your own domain name versus using some of the free sites.

An example top level would be afreesite.com. If you signed up, they would give you a sub-domain name like yourname.afreesite.com or afreesite.com/yourname. Neither of these are top level.

Cheers,

Ed

Oh! Now I think I get it!

Then my only question would be, does a blogger blog count as a top level domain? For example, http://freepoemsonline.blogspot.com ?

Afraid not. http://freepoemsonline.blogspot.com is a sub-domain. http://blogspot.com would be the top level domain.
