Adsense is alive, well and living in.... 2008/06/12 11:13
...one of my niches!

I have a number of websites that bring in a regular income from Adsense. But the clicks have always been in the 2c - 50c range (with the occasional $1 click) so I have always just looked at it as an add-on for a site, not the sole source of income - even though some of the sites get a lot of clicks.

Then all of a sudden, one of my blogs started spitting out $2 clicks! I had always heard that there was good money in that particular niche, but the competition is ferocious, so I wasn't expecting to do much in it.

But for $2 clicks I will redouble my efforts. A bit more traffic and that blog will be a nice little sideline.

Anyone else getting much juice from Adsense?

-Mark.

Hi Mark,

I'm actually trying an experiment on my cooking website with Adsense. What I've done is go to the Adword Keyword Tool and look for high paying keywords related to my niche.

What I do is start by typing in my main keyword. Then, check "use synonyms" and get keyword results.

Next, Where it says,"Choose Columns to display", I choose Show estimated average CPC.

Next, I put in a maximun CPC bid of $100 and hit recalculate.

Then, I click on the column where it says "Estimated Average CPC" and then click the up arrow. This will display my highest paying keywords that I will choose from.

Once I find a high paying one that I like, I use the tags:

<!--google_ad_section_start -->
my high paying keyword
<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I surround the high paying keyword that I'm targeting. I do this for every page.

They say it takes 2 to 3 weeks for the ads to adjust.

You can play with the keyword tool to find lots of high paying keywords of your choosing that you think might fit into your site.

I am curious to see what will happen!

Hi Kathy,

What purpose does the code around your keyword serve? Does it allow you to select the keyword the ads are based on, instead of Google selecting it based on your content?

It is a pity that Google's Keyword Tool only displays the cost to BUY Adwords clicks. The cost displayed has very little to do with the payout you get for a click on the Adsense ads on your site.

More specifically, and as we all know, advertisers can and do set far, far lower CPC values for ads shown on the content network ... which is where we reside as Adsense publishers.

I've read recommendation that vary from "don't use the content network at all" to "set your CPC for the content network to 10% of your main CPC".

So if the Keyword Tool estimates $20 a click, a smart advertiser might set their content network CPC to $1-$2, Google keeps their cut (whatever that may be), and we're left with 50c-$1 ... if your Quality Score is good!

All the more reason to pick the high value keywords in the manner you describe.

-Mark.

Yes Mark, the tags are supposed to allow you to select the keyword that ads are based on. I've only started doing it and it is supposed to take a couple of weeks so my ads haven't changed yet.

Although we can't control how much we get paid at least we can find and choose the higher paying keywords.
