Niche Idea, Would Like Input... 2007/02/18 12:41

So my Word Tracker subscription recently expired. I had it for a week and did a lot of research with it - at least enough to not need it for a while. I plan on buying the full year package once I earn a few more dollars from posting articles and such. Anyway, here's my point...
I can't research this right now because I don't have the program, but it seems when I type a specific sports organization into Google the result come back with surprisingly few competing web sites. As I know nothing about sports I figure this is a safe thing to talk about in this forum as there's absolutly no chance I would care if one of you took this idea (if it were actually a viable idea).
Anyway, for instance when I type something like "San Francisco 49ers" or "Philadelphia Phillies" into Google, I come back with a list of competing sites that is only in the low millions (surprising considering I've named a major US city in the search), generally between one and two million. Now, obviously I don't know how many people are searching on a specific team on any given day, but it would seem as all these organization are fairly "high profile" and not obscure, that the number would be high, and would remain consistantly so throughout the year (more during that team's season, but...). Anyway, I read on one thread that Holly looks for a site with little competition, which she defined as "under 5 million sites" and a couple thousand searches a day. Perhaps one of you who has Word Tracker would like to research this and post some general results, but...my guess is professional sports teams would fit that M.O. So perhaps a blog about your favorite team, or your favorite player (you could link I guess to different gambeling web sites where one could bet on said team if you want some affiliate links on the page) might prove a profitable idea? I don't know, I'm new to all this and just spit-balling here as I'm trying to come up with a good niche web site idea that I could get excited about. Anyway, I'd just be curious to hear people's thoughts on this.
I don't know, maybe there's actually a lot of competition for something like this but I thought of it when reading the new version of Honest Riches where Holly talks about picking a specific city and tailoring some site to that city (classified ads, etc.) Anyway...thoughts? comments?
