Honestly, the best FREE tools you can possibly find are in the SEO BOOK Blog.

On top of the blog page you will find a link to "tools" and there you will find an endless amount of tools you can use. His Keyword suggestion tool is phenomenal. It will show you Google and Yahoo results, as well as the amount of competing pages for keywords and how much it will cost to bid on keywords.

His book is also great. You can find the link to it on top of the blog page. The author also provides videos and other great SEO information. When Wordtracker was too expensive for me, I used this site for all my SEO needs.

There is a link to a free SEO Book on Holly's home page (the site where we bought her ebook from). I started to read it and it is good.

Some how my previous post got edited OK, I was talking about 'SEO BOOK' which Sean was talking is costing $79 (tools
are free though), Holly I think have got link to Brad Cal lens SEO made easy, I have been thru that it is a good book but covers basics(very nicely).

Looks like the keyword suggestion tool mentioned above is no longer working properly? I tried it just now (since I had not seen it before) and got a page full of socket and connection errors where it appers to be pulling info from Overture.

Someone should drop Aaron a note and let him know somethings up with either his coding or the Ovterture API. Look in the forum for my personal picks for keyword research.
