No Clicks! 2007/02/13 01:22
I’m a bit confused about my Adwords account and would appreciate some thoughts.

Recently I opened an Adwords account, set up and launched a few campaigns connected to some sites I have. The figure I set produced a good number of 1-3 placements for the phrases I use but the majority seem to fall into the 4-6 band group i.e. according to the estimated ad positions in the Traffic Estimate tool. That’s how I wanted it.

My confusions rests with the number of clicks these ads have produced. With the exception of 20 clicks I received on the first campaign I launched, (and that was within the first few days and they did pay for themselves) not one more click has been made in any of the campaigns I have running. I’ve four campaigns running.

Could this be the result of the keyword lists I have attached to each campaign and if so how many keywords would members suggest should be in a keyword list?

It is difficult I know to be specific in a case like this but any advice on how to tweak an Adword campaign would be appreciated and maybe it will help start a larger thread.

Many thanks for any help offered.#

I suppose I should have added that I'm running my campaign on the Google Search Network as it is more highly targeted.

The thought of running the campaign on both the Search and Content Network had occured to me but I thought to myself that the proper way to go was via the Search Network simply because it is more targeted. Granted it may be more expensive but I would assume you will get better results?

Anyway that's just a follow up thought I've had. I'm looking forward to hearing opinions.

My first question would be how many impressions you are getting? If this number is low, the problem may be that your ketwords are not being searched enough. If this is the case, I would double check your keyword research to make sure you are targeting better search terms.

If you are comfortable with your number of impressions, then I would look at two things. One is your ad copy. There are some common techniques to employ here, such as using your keywords in your title and in the adcopy. It may be that your copy needs tweaked. The other thing I would look at is your KW groups, and make sure they are specific enough that your ad is shown to people that would be interested. For example, if you are selling forex information, then "make money" may be to broad..if the searchers are interested in real estate programs, they won't click.

I generally try to limit my KW groups to 25 or so phrases(75 including the match phrases). I try to keep my groups pretty tightly focused, and use a new keyword group for related words that arent as focused. Each group gets its own ad. For example, If I had a campaign for Holly's ebook, I would have a group with things such as Honest Riches, Honest Riches 2, Honest Riches Ebook, etc...
I would have a seperate group and ad for Holly Mann, Holly Mann ebook, etc...
Therefore if my searcher typed Honest Riches, that phrase would be in my headline and ad, and if the searched for Holly's name, it would appear.

At this point, I would not suggest using content network. It can be a money pit. I recently learned one technique for it that I think is very good, but I haven't tried it yet so can't suggest it.
Hope this helps...please keep us posted on how it goes.

Warmly.
Kevin

I would be suspicious with 20 clicks right away on launch and then zip later on that good ol Goog has uped the keywood cost on you beyond your default. IOW, some of your best keywords may not be active and are now suspended. Go check your ad campaign and be sure you have not been priced up and out. That happened to me more than a few times on several campaigns that were doing alright and, it is vexing, I agree!

I am having trouble too. I seem to have found that deleting inactive keywords may help. Click on your site and a page should come up with your site again. Click on that and then keywords. This will bring up you keyword list and show what is active or inactive. If you want to delete inactive items, just go down the list and click on them and when done hit delete.

One thing I have found that Google looks for is a high CTR (Click Throught Rate). Why? Simply because Google is trying to make a profit for Google more clicks = more $$$$.

Look at ways to imporve your CTR.

One popular way is to use Dynamic Keyword Insertion (DKI).
This helps your ads stand out becuase it uses the search term used in the Google search and inserts the matching keywords from your keyword list into the ads. Keyword matches become bold when displayed.

The code to use this in your ads is:

{KeyWord:ad copy}
What happens is the KeyWord gets replaced by the matching keyword or phrase and the ad copy remains the same.

I find it very useful in the headline.

Differnet formatting tips:
  • keyword - no capitalization

  • Keyword - First word is capitalized

  • KeyWord - Every Word Is Capitalized

  • KEYword - EVERY letter in first word is capitalized

  • KEYWord - LIKE Above But With Each Word Capitalized
