I read everywhere that keywords in meta tags are not relevant anymore. Does it make a difference whether they are used or not? I am busy re-doing some things with my site and I wonder if I should spend much time with this. Thanks.

Yes spend time with it. While maybe with the advent of Latent Semantic Indexing etc, keywords in your meta tags may not be as relevant as they once were, but don't believe for a second that you go without implementing them just as before. There is a lot of misinformation out there about this, and some people are taking it the wrong way, not even doing proper keyword research. While Google, is saying that it isn't quite as important, you certainly will not be penalized for optimizing your pages properly. Also, Google isn't the only search engine your optimizing for either remember. Every little bit helps in your optimization, so pay little heed to what you have heard, and keep optimizing in the same way you have been doing.
