Latent semantic indexing is basically based on a new algorythm introduced by Google. Actually, it's not really so new at all. It's just that Google has just recently admitted to having this algorythm in place.
LSI is an algorythm that scans your webpages for many different terms or synonyms that could possibly mean the same as or mean something very similar to your sites overall theme.
It makes sure that your websites content is valid unto itself and to the rest of the pages in your website. To understand it a little more you should really study a bit about what a silo structured site is.
Inside a website, you can have many different silo's, which are basically subtopics related to your overall theme of your site. If you have a look at the videos on my site dahost, you can begin to understand what that structure I'm talking about is.
So inside of each silo, even though they are subtopics related to your overall theme, you still want to keep the adjoining pages to that subtopic relevent. In turn your subtopics lend strength to your overall theme of your site.
So if you take a site such as Davinatorbiz.com, it's overall theme is on the topic of seo. Then all of the subtopics, such as Keyword Research, organic seo, improving search engine ranking etc. are all subtopics to the overall concept of the site.
The larger this site gets, the more strength it will have in the search engines. With lots of good content, all relevant to your theme and subtopics, the more you will be rewarded in the search engines. So it is very important in your websites, that you avoid theme bleeding at all costs. Theme bleeding can really hurt your rankings and how the search engines spiders view your site.
It is said, that a well themed, well structured site in many instances can beat out websites with a way higher page rank, and also a site that may have more backlinks to it.
As Holly has stated many times, and she does know, because she has proved it time and again with her own websites. Sometimes PR means squat, in terms of search engine ranking. A great linking structure with good quality content, that avoids theme bleeding will win you good results in the search engines.
Holly may wish to ad to this, I'm merely her protege... I hope that helps you to understand a little bit better though dahost and any others who may have had the same question.
Take care, Davin
