I'm another one that doesn't pull out the KW research tools until later in the process. Especially when I'm in the brainstorming phase.

Some of the sites I like to use for niche research are Amazon.com(for the reasons already mentioned in regards to magazines...also check the bestselling books), ebay(what are people looking to buy?), Clickbank.com(take a look at what digital products are already selling), meetup.com(if people are looking to get together locally, that's a good sign.)

I also check the groups on myspace, and surf through squidoo for topic ideas...not everyone with a lens is a marketer.

Hope this helps someone generate some ideas.
