I'm in the research phase of figuring out whether I want to do this niche. So when I search on Google w/ the key phrase that I am interested in, there are only four adsense ads along the right side of the page. What does this generally mean? I think it means that it's a strong niche, without much competition but I'm not sure. Is there any way I can see what the pay per click is on this key phrase?

Yes, there is a tool that you can use to see what advertisers are paying for the keywords. The link is https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

I use this tool to research different keywords for my site so that I choose the more profitable ones to include for my adsense ads.

However, you can also use it if you are wanting to purchase ads so you can look for lower cost keywords that might bring you cheaper traffic.

Generally, the higher the cost of the keyword, the more the competition.

It means that the keyphrase you were searching for is not competitive enough or at least not many advertisers are willing to bid for that keyphrase.
