By affiliate marketing do you earn money based on only the commissions or do you earn money for promoting and directing traffic to the product too? Thanks

The core meaning of affiliate marketing is promoting someone else's product or service and earning a commission on each sale. There are many different ways to do this but just promoting and sending traffic is not considered affiliate marketing. However, sending traffic with some kind of personal identifier that, in turn, generates a commission is generally considered affiliate marketing as well.
