Are Directories a Con? 2007/06/10 10:26
Hello all

I need help. About three weeks ago I registered my website with at least 100 difference directory which where in Holly’s book, but I am obviously missing something big because registering with these directory’s don’t seem to have done any good. I thought I would have at least 100 different links back to my website from them, but I only have a few. I am using the following tool to check my link backs.

http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/default.htm

according to this tool I have hardly any link backs with google and about just under 70 through yahoo etc but the ones on yahoo are mainly from articles I have wrote or forum posts from forums I am a member of. I am trying to optimise my site for google but am obviously failing miserably at the moment. I know I have lots more link backs than shown because I know of lots of people that are affilates of mine promoting my book and I go to their website and there is a link to mine there. So why is it no showing up? I have also tried doing the google link bank check i.e. link: and then my website - again not everything seems to show up. Help, me if you can I'm feeling down!

The tool you use only checks 2 search engines but it works right. Here is a much better tool, that you can run from your desktop: http://www.checkyourlinkpopularity.com/

Not all directories will approve your link instantly. Some take a couple of days, some weeks and others even months. Another reason might be that the websites with your link on them are not ranking high enough in the search engines to be found by the software that checks your backlinks.

In my opinion submitting to directories is a great way to push your search engine positions but 100 won't do much. Submit your website to one thousand directories and you will see some changes in your search engine rankings.

Hi geedo

Thanks for that, all the directories I submitted to were ranked either 3 or 4 on google rankings, so I don't think that is a problem. I got replies back from most of them within a couple of days saying it has been approved yet these ones still aren't showing up. I will check out the tool you suggested. It took me a few hours to submit to the first lot of directories I don't mind spending the time but only if there is a result and I don't have the time to submit to 1000 directories if there is no result and I know I could pay someone else to do it but I don't want to waste money if there is know result - I am still waiting to see any proof of results. Can you or anyone else actually give me a real life example of how their search engine rankings were improved by submitting to directories.

Listen Joe, your expecting results way to fast! SEO sometimes takes months sometimes to have a recognizable effect. Submitting to directories is pretty much the first thing anybody should do with a new website. You will see results from it, but some directories take months and months for you to get listed.

You definitely want to try to get into DMOZ, but this could take a long, long time if you get in at all. Even though your website has been approved by directories doesn't necessarily mean that they have gone ahead and added you yet!

You will see better results with higher PR sites, but unfortunately many of the higher PR directories are not free.
Just keep plugging away at it, like I said, depending on your site, the competition etc. etc. natural SEO takes a while but later on you will see some results if you stick with it.

The easiest way to have this submitting done for you is to pay for it. I've usually done it the hard way myself, manually, well with the help of software. SEO Elite, IBP, or I've even been using Brad Callens' new submitter lately which seems quite good.

One thing to remember, try and switch up your linking text and description text every once in a while to create a natural effect for the search engines. If you just use the same text all the time this puts up a warning flag and can actually do you damage!

One of the best little products I've found for understanding and getting rankings faster for under 10 bucks is this. I was real impressed with it and started promoting it from my SEO site, but this guy and the vids really help and explain things great.

Hope that helps you a bit anyway

Davinator is absolutely right, Joe. It takes time for the backlinks to appear in the search engines. For me I usually see a jump in about 4 to 6 weeks - but sometimes it takes a few weeks longer.

Your best bet is to create 2 to 3 articles and keep submitting them to as many article directories as well over this time period. You'll see the benefits of your actions.

Thanks for the input guys. I didn't mean to come over as impatient it's just that I don't have time to waste on things that don't work. But I am prepared to wait if I know that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks for clarifying things for me. Directories are just part of the equation anyway as I am getting lots of back links from articles I am writing.

Thanks again.
