Thinking of starting over... 2007/09/04 21:49
Hi everyone!

Not so long ago I got my webpage up to try and sell my ebook. My idea was to create a website that would grow. I now realize (thank you Guido) that after I started adding content, it really shouldn't appear on the same page as the sales page because people will get distracted from buying the book by reading other things.

http://howtohelpkidsread.com/

See what I mean?
I am not sure how to "separate" the two.

The first page was built in Joomla. I want to know if I can build another site in Joomla that no one can see except me so that I can leave the site I have now "live" while I work on a completely new site?

You can laugh - it's OK. I just get soooo confused sometimes
In fact most of the time.

Your help is appreciated!

Hi Ali,

yes you can work on a new site while the current one keeps to be live, you just gotta do it on your own computer. Therefore you have to install PHP and MySqul, the easiest way is through Xampp (a complete Distribution that will setup itself).

You can then locally build your site and once you are done you simply upload the files and the database to your domain.

The best way to sell your ebook is to get a domain on its own, where you only host the sales letter, the thank you page and the download.
Then you create several niche website around your topic like the one you already have (howtohelpkidsread). You will have articles and other content on your site as well as a newsletter (on each niche website). You will direct the people from your niche website to your sales letter or you sign them up for your newsletter and then advertise your ebook. This can be done in several ways: write reviews of your own ebook, about the author sig with articles, your forum signatures... You can also build squidoo pages around your topic and put links to your sales page on it.

Don't expect hundrets of visitors from squidoo, the mass of your lenses will make the traffic! One lense will bring like 10 visitors a week to your sales letter, so build 30 lenses! That goes actually for everything you do in internet marketing. You submit one article and you get like 10 visitors a day, You submit 10 articles and you get 100 visitors a day, you submit 100 articles and... Got it?

A step forward... I found Xampp and installed it. Now I am going to see if I can follow the tutorial on the Joomla forum to do the rest.

I may be here a few days...lol

Great, you are half-way done.

You can call up the xampp start by typing in your browser: localhost

Now you need to install Joomla into the htdocs directory. The path is normally C:/xampp/htdocs

Install it in a subfolder folder, maybe call it "Joomla".

Once you have installed Joomla you can call it up on your browser with
localhost/Joomla

or the admin area with
localhost/Joomla/administrator

So do I understand correctly ??

Do I install Joomla again for this? A new installation on my computer, like I never had it before?

thanks,
