Yes, you have installed xampp on your local computer. So you have to install Joomla there as well. Then you can build your site on your local computer and upload it to the internet once it is done (including the database).

Hey Ali,

Do you have CPanel on your web hosting?
If so you, can just install a second Joomla on a different folder or and work from there. No one will ever see it unless you specify a link to it or configure your hosting to redirect to it by default.

I believe you can go through Fantastico and install a second Joomla site.

Installing XAMPP and running it from your PC is not for the faint of heart especially if the installation didn't go through successfully.

Hope that helps.
Phillip

Thank you, Phillip. I may need to do that. I got xampp successfully, then I put my Joomla download in the docs file of xampp and unzipped it. I thought it would open when I typed in http://localhost/joomla, but I keep getting a 404 error.

I will try your suggestion.

thanks,

ali

Ali,

I think the directories under windows are case sensitive, I guess your folder is called Joomla. Try

http://localhost/Joomla

You might want to check to make sure all your PHP files are at the root of http://localhost/Joomla. Usually ZIP are archived into a folder itself and when you extract it retains that folder that it was originally zipped into. Also make sure your XAMPP is running properly... i.e. if you open http://localhost/ you will see the XAMPP startup page. Your taskbar at the bottom right of your windows screen will also give you a meter status to indicate that XAMPP is running correctly. Usually white is good, yellow or red is not good.

Unless you are experienced with installing and running your own local version of XAMPP and Joomla, it really is a pain in the %@%@#$@#$ to get it to work.

Yes, both of you guys were right! Big Pain!

However, I found something that worked great. It is called Joomla Stand Alone Solution. It installs wamp with joomla already inside. Don't ask me how. All I know is I tried it and with just a few clicks it was ready to go.

So, if you want to see how joomla works or just play around with it...

One thing I did wrong the first time -- they said don't put in a password. But later in the joomla installation they assign you a password. Write it down or you won't be able to access the admin area later.

Have a good time!
