What a Good Marketing Web Site Should Have (Part 1)
Many people ask when starting out in this industry, “What should my website
look like and what should it contain?”To answer this question we should
first of all ask ourselves “What is the purpose of the website?” Once
we know where we are heading it is far easier to arrive at the answers to our questions.
Let us say for instance that we are selling a widget. The reason for selling this particular
widget is that we have done our homework and found that there is a market with credit
cards in hand ready to buy such widgets. We also need to, as it were, get into the heads
of our market. By answering questions such as :
· What are the benefits of this widget
· What is the purpose of this widget?,
· What will this widget do for me?
· If I was the prospect would I buy it from here?
· Can this widget be obtained elsewhere and if so why buy here?
For the purpose of this article we will assume that many other questions
are asked, and answered, in order to get in the frame of mind that
our prospective customer will be in on arrival to our site.
The site itself then should first of all grab the attention of the prospect by
having an interesting headline. We know from our homework that the
prospect will be interested in the product but will he/she stay around long
enough to get to the point of sale? Once the headline grabs their attention we need to
highlight the benefits of the product and we can’t do this unless the
“copy” (techie talk for what we write) holds the attention until the mission is accomplished.
We should endeavour to further educate the prospect with interesting facts
that build the prospects desire to purchase the widget at any cost. Whoa!
What do you mean any cost? Surely you don’t mean that?…. Providing you have done
your job correctly… there should be no reason whatsoever why
the
prospect will not buy from you. Of course the price you set will also
be well
researched and tested (test and test and test again test everything
but that in itself will require further articles to explain)
Just to recap let’s see what we have so far:
1. A well researched market with credit cards in hand
2. A product to satisfy the market’s desire
3. A sales page that contains compelling informative and desire building copy
OK…. Let us now round up with probably the most important piece of the jigsaw…the call to
Action namely get your card out and buy me what are you waiting for buy now
while we still have them at this stupid ridiculously low super price?
You may use bonuses, limited time offers (inertia selling) but you must give
reasons why you are making the offers and above all they must be genuine honest and ethical.
Seriously you must have a method by which the prospect can purchase your product.
Without this you can’t sell your widgets.
In this article I have just scraped
the surface of this very large subject and chosen a very simple one page sales letter
to accomplish
the task of selling a widget. There are innumerable other ingredients that can and
do make a big difference to successful marketing using web sites
the essentials are:
· A good
Attention grabbing headline
· Great
Interesting and informative copy
·
Desire created by the copy
· The call to
Action and the method to purchase
Yes good old fashioned
AIDA strikes again it’s tried and tested and works so apply it in your sales copy.
With the many older methods still being used on and off line these days to overcome the cynics and sceptics the use
of video presentations are used to good effect. A sales letter both on and off line has been referred to often as a salesperson in print
with video presentations you can cut out the print and just have the salesperson. This method can actually help sales as many
of the prospects are coming out of schools these days unable to read but still spending money or use both video running along with
a sales page so the page is read out by the person in the video as this helps those that can’t read and also gives more
inputs to those that can.
Just one more point that can be used to good effect is the ethical bribe. E.g. join this fantastic site
