We don't allow black flies in Texas. We do have the odd mosquito though.

Who said anything about relaxing? Fishing is serious business in that part of the world!

oh and you mention getting a mentor - where would a newbie find someone who is willing to show them the ropes? I was thinking of creating a new thread specifically for this to see if anyone out there is willing to help me out. My site is page 2 google after 4 submission to google - for my main keword. I just cant shift it to page one and am supposed to be starting my business 1st march and cant afford adwords. Any advice?
Thanks

I wish I had listened to this the last time I read it! Mostly, once a newbie says to themselves "I want to be the next great online marketer" They are bombarded with promos that it IS so easy to get in the trap of buying EVERYTHING! When what they should be doing is studying WHY these sales letters are working so well on them! And then use what they learned!
The only thing that I can add is this: get ONE mentor that talks to you on the phone!! It's worth the extra investment!

That is your #1 problem right there. Don't just read. Learn...and then take action and stick with it to completion before going on to the "next best thing".
Trust your instincts when it comes to products being sold. Does it feel like "hype"..then it probably is.
Does it give you good solid business information or is it a shortcut? If it is a shortcut it likely is a waste of money.
Learn from someone you trust. Someone you feel you can connect with and that you feel is pushing you in the right direction.

Cathy

Quick one here...
  • If you are continually looking at all the new 'products' that are coming on the market, then stop this right now.
  • Your money should be spent on basics (like hosting, autoresponder, etc).
  • You can also purchase stuff that can make you money (PLR or MRR products for example).
  • If you can afford it then hire a mentor.
  • Cull your email subscriptions down to those which are of consistent value to you.
  • Adopt the vendor mindset, as opposed to the buyer mindset
  • Start creating products (takes time and effort - live with it) and build an email list.
  • Remember, it's a long journey. There is no such thing as instant gratification.
  • Get into the habit of researching before asking (this is a better way to learn).
  • Plus other stuff, which more experienced members than myself can advise you on.

Shoot me down in flames if I'm wrong please. I've been there before (not so long ago) and I want to help.

Keith

Thanks Keith for this. Funny - I was just coming to the same conclusion today that I can spend too much time acquiring so called get rich quick pdfs when the real money is in getting on with it. I've already started to cull my subscriptions down to the very few.

I've also joined Holly Mann's Honest Marketing Movement which put me on to Dave Risley the Blogging guru and this forum.

I am new here however, these thoughts are really true. I have been learning for the past year. Almost feels like I have been back to school. It did take me a while to see that there are a lot of empty promises around. The work is the key as well as a determination to stay with it.

Hi Keith

You have hit the nail firmly on the head!

It is so easy to suffer from information overload when you start work online and to easily get taken in by al the freebies and offers that appear in your inbox.

I also have a rule that if I ever do get tempted by something that could be beneficial to me, if it doesn't do what it claims, then I request a refund. All good products will come with an unconditional moneyback garauntee - so use it, and if it doesn't come with a garauntee then don't buy it in the first place!

Yvonne

Brilliant post so many people walk into Internet Marketing with the wrong mind set and misconceptions about what they need to know and do. I in all honesty was like that the first time I typed "work from home" into a search engine.

I bought into all the hype, Thankfully my wife is the voice of sanity and stopped me spend the kids collage fund on junk.

Thumbs up Re: Newbie Mini-Bootcamp

We made the mistake of not settling on a single niche when we first got started (my husband is also my partner in crime!)
We were all over the net, looking for the big opportunity and buying up stuff everywhere.
To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Don't do it to yourself. If you're really good at something already, then you've probably got your niche. Simply do the research to make sure there's a good market out there for it... before you spend the time.
If you can't think of something professionally, what's your hobby? If you've been enjoying one for years, then you've got something to offer.
Again do your research.
If there's countless millions of results on your Google search for your main keyword, then perhaps look at a single aspect (or even a part of a single aspect) of your chosen niche and research that, until you find something that shows promise.
When you've settled on the "what"... FOCUS! Don't let yourself be tempted away to try the "next big thing". Don't do anything else until you've got your first product together or your first site up and operating.
If it helps, there's stacks of free information and free resources at the "Newbies" link below.
Good luck.
