What are the best resources of traffic that you have come across that you can advise a newbie

Blogging and then sending your blog posts automatically to facebook, twitter and linkedin. Also posting in message boards with a call to action sig file.

You can use the search function at the top of the forum and find many threads about traffic...

There is much useful information....

Do forum posting, blog commenting. Make sure that your site boasts of quality content articles only so that readers will keep visiting.

mhmm, there's always organic traffic from google.
I'm surprised not more people are building sniper-style sites (target the exact keyword
in your domain name) because right now, they rank really well (and fast too).
then re-invest money you make there to quickly add quality content around related
keywords and before you know it, you've got yourself a nice authority site.
So, even if (when!) Google updates their algo again and suddenly sinks all those spammy
sniper-sites that don't have any content on them, you'll still be up there.
And the good thing is: right now you can still rank within a week with just 3-5 articles and a handful of backlinks.

I have already started with a few articles and i am currently posting comments in blog posts to get backlinks

a) Sign up for Google Adsense
b) Blog
c) website directory submssion
d) niche dirtectory submission
e) content article submssion to Ezine Articles
f) Join forums that deal with your business niche and contribute on a regular basis-become a credible voice of knowledge that others can come to view you as a an expert
g) Obtain one way back links from reputable sites
h) offer a contest on your site in obtaining even more traffic
i) do a press release

Think outside the box-there are literally hundreds of ways of increasing your traffic-leave no stone unturned.

It depends what your goal and budget is?

If you can afford it paid traffic is immediate and if properly optimized and constantly monitored and adjusted, it can be very profitable.

I would suggest yahoo and facebook paid ads verses google for someone first starting.

Banners work well if there properly made and being shown on the right sites.

Making or having made software that's useful and giving it away through cnet and others that may syndicate it, and making the people give you an email to use it or receive it.

And then use that to email related products that you promote.

Ebay is also a great place to get traffic that is targeted, as long as you structure you offer correctly. such as running a classified ad giving a free ebook,software,etc., and getting an email for the gift, and doing a one time offer for a related product( at a very low price point like 5,7,9 dollars)
this will build you two list, one with buyers

and you can also pay for your ads this way and have a list of buyers that you can promote to.

I like the eBay idea, haven't had time to look into it yet,
but heard of many who are having great success with.
Even Jeff Johnson is bringing out a new course (well V2.0
of his old course) on using eBay for leadgen....

WOW I found the neatest thing the other day to try and No i haven't yet but plan to.
Did you know you can post a link in any wikipedia listing to an article of yours?

I will be trying this week.

I found this guy George Brown I believe his name was and he had a free video explaining it.

No one mentions Q&A sites like Yahoo! Answers. To be honest, the conversations in these type of sites are more focused on getting answers compared to forums where they may be more idle chatter, so you can get to the point in less time.
