We all have our preference and it's how some people operate. Reading can be replaced by videos and audio books, but yes reading is a necessity.. I think it's wise to be selective of what we read and focus on those the subjects that really matter.

So as we digest more information and are still served with a monsterous buffet table, of EBooks, Videos, PDF Files, Reports and the works... what emotions do you go through? Or let's go deeper - how many can emotions flood through your soul?

Information overload coupled with not knowing if I'm spending my time in the right direction. I would love to see online tutorials on how to build a web page from scratch with explanations of all the terms.
To me it is like teaching a child. You first start with the alphabet (on line terms) then how to put them together to build words,(?) then how to put those words together to form sentences (website building) then the basics of grammar etc.... I know this sounds simple but from all that I have read on the internet, the best things that I have come across are often in, simple terms with examples, definitions, videosetc. And with a clear cut start here end here descriptions. That way when ever you go through and complete it, you can read any book in that language. This case being online marketing......I have not found that. yet. That is in simple enough terms for me to understand.(I'm getting a lot of it from hard work and A LOT of searching) I think a lot of people that do this for so long (and understandably so) tend to use terms that no one knows what they are saying (or very little) EVERYONE that I have talked to about online marketing says the very same thing to me.....
Sorry.....I'm on my soap box........I will get down now..... LOL

    Hey Woolly,

When I first started trying to learn web design I was in the same boat. I'm
also a visual learner and do best with video coupled with application and I
    think you'll like this...

I give this site credit for 80% of my web design training...

After each tutorial click on the try it your self button, change the code and
see the result. I still go there to this day to learn new stuff. I'm learning
PHP now. They have tutorials on all types of code...

    HTML - PHP - XML - SQL - CSS - JAVASCRIPT - ASP - Etc. Etc...

I really think you'll like it and Please, let me know if it helps. Hearing that I
helped is my greatest reward. Oh, I forgot to mention it's FREE.

Looking forward to what you think,

P.S. I forgot to mention how I deal with information overload...
I meditate into a powernap. It always helps to put things into perspective.
I don't know what it is but, right when I'm falling asleep or waking up,
that's when the light bulbs go off in my head. A 45-60 minute powernap is
all it takes. I'm about ready for one right now

    Smile Re: Information Overload

My biggest thing with information overload was not getting started on something. I signed up for several list, visited forums and sites. What happened was I was not doing anything that would get me started in the right direction.
Finally I picked one thing, got started, started making a little money then went back to the forums for more information on how to increase the money I was making.
If I wouldn't have shut myself out from all the "gurus" I would still be sitting on the fence "trying to figure it out". You have to start doing to really start learning.

Excellent input Scott. Information overload is my next on my list of studies and I agree with your thought on gaining direction. A quick inquiry - how did you go about in identifying your "Direction?"

Thanks... I believe that is key to unlocking the chains of information overload.

Information overload can be a good thing or bad. My experience with more information than I can ingest was great as I was putting time in learning different aspects of IM and categorizing them along the way for further review first.
Now that I am trying to implement the hardest part is breaking away from information gathering thinking I'm going to miss out on something, there for Information overload and lack of focus. My goal this year is to implement more and research less which is hard for me since I'm a technician that wants to know how and why things work

I'm doing exactly the same thing. I'm working on a way to do both and now the problem I'm running into is, time. How do we implement and continue to gather info. at the same time. I'm thinking outsource the implement part but now, who can I trust for my outsourcing? I have perfectionist and trust issues and tryed outsourcing once and ended up spending way to much time outsourcing. Time is now the largest problem.

    Wow.
I've replied to 2 other threads on this topic, and put in a link to something I wrote a while ago.

At the risk of being accused of being a serial spammer, I'll include the link again here:

    cheers,
    Eric G.
If I may quote from your article Eric,

"Like many people, I have a hard drive of stuff that I have bought on impulse, and have never used.

I now make a practice of NEVER buying anything until I’ve taken at least 24 hours to “sleep on it”. During this time, I consider whether it’s directly compatible with what I’m doing, and if so, is something that I can put to use IMMEDIATELY.

And the more hype and inducements to “BUY NOW”, the less likely I am to purchase it."

This just about sums it all up. The whole article is excellent and really true.

    Thanks

Many people, including myself, suffer from information overload.

I, for one, an information junky. I collect information read it, read some thing else, which may be at variance with something I read earlier. Now I then have a predicament, which piece or pieces of information are correct, are they both correct but are tackling an issue from a different angle.

Also with so much information it is too easy to become aq 'butterfly' flitting from one piece of information to another, reading all but learning or applying nothing.

What I (and we all) need is a system for taking in the information in bite sized chunks, in the correct order, so that you learn and digest before going on to the next topic so that the whole process is understood. Once we have understood the process we may wish to revisit it and learn advanced techniques. Without a roadmap through all the pieces of information we may try to learn some of the advanced stuff before fully grasping the basics and so become confused and fail.
I couldn't have said it any better. Didn't have to write a single thing, you read my mind !!

    Cool Re: Information Overload

I was just cleaning up my inbox and came across this time management
email, compliments of Michael E. Young...

Here's a quick method that's worked for me and others who have tried it.

    • Get yourself an inexpensive timer.
    • Set it for 50 minutes.
    • Give yourself the freedom to focus on one important task for that 50 minutes. That means you are voluntarily pushing aside everything else for the period of time and allowing yourself to just do one thing.
    • At the end of 50 minutes, take a 10-minute break.
    • Repeat.

Bet you'll double your productivity just with this one simple change to the way you work.
I'm about to put this plan to the test. A good friend and client want's me to
    finish his eBook.

Hope I can do it in 50 minutes...

I started out with some "bum Marketing" because it didn't cost anything. The cost factor defined my "Direction" at the start. Once I started (doing)making a few dollars I started spending some money on outsourcing link building, copywriting etc. Since then I have created a website on my own using sitespinner with some content (its rather crude) and a presell page for a clickbank product. This website is making me about $150 a month and growing. Right now I am focusing on seo for the website and cleaning it up some plus adding content. My goal is to have a website with helpful content on it along with a couple of products. I want people to come to it not only to buy my products but to find useful information which builds trust.

50 minutes to finish the eBook , not complete it. Mostly I'm just making it
look good. He provided all the content and I'm down to the final pages and
resources section. It's going to look good!

    Oh, that tooth brush...

I'll be changing that soon and mainly plan on doing SEO. I've been studying
for over a year now, implementing, and seeing good results

    .

That's one reason why I'm moving away from web design. It's also to
competitive and cheap. Anyone can download a good free wysiwyg and
throw a site together for free not to mention all the great free resources
    out there like...

To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

I'm too honest and would rather show someone how to do it for free than
charge what I would really need. SEO is a whole different story. True
experts like Paul Lynch and others are hard to find and I'll soon be one of
    them.

Once you see what's involved most start looking to outsource the SEO and...
there I'll be. Seeing the results of my work is far more rewarding than
money and that makes a great combination!

Results = Money Pages High on the SERPS, Which = Payday... It's a win win Combination!

The tooth brush thing is pretty cool though

thanks for the input Carlton. That's interesting about web design... yup there's a lot out there, but I haven't seen anyone that focuses on the needs of internet marketers yet.

    Anyway back to INFORMATION OVERLOAD.

For those who have overcome and master the info overload beast... Besides time management, what other methods did you use?
