Default To Quit Or Not To Quit That Is The Question

Ok I know this is the "Success Mindset Forum" so at the cost of being politically incorrect I will ask this question anyway.

If you have been in the internet marketing arena for about five years and have yet to experience any real "success" would it be safe to decide that it is time to quit or should you hang in there like a good solder and see it through to the bitter end.

Is 5 years a good time line to start considering other options.

I've been at it since 2004, I was very frustrated at first but I never quit, it all depends on what you've been doing, I spent my first 3 years trying and failing, I win at somethings and fail at others but I've learned so much during the failing period, and the more I fail the more I learn, so it's endless so I think the best thing to do is to filter the ones that doesn't work and work single mindedly on the ones that does and work on improve on that field. Good luck...

I have to agree with both Marc and Jim,
you have I would guess in the last 5 years learned a lot and put a lot of time and effort into your IM business. I have a few questions for you.

1: what Niche are you targeting
2: have you been working with this Niche constant for the past 5 years
3: What are or where your main goals With IM.

those apart to answer your question directly, Honestly only you can truly answer this but I think the fact that you came her to ask shows your not yet ready to throw in the towel. Maybe its time to clean the slate and go back to basics or take what you already know and rework it into ebooks or f&q style blogs to build a list to sell too.

Edison failed 10000 times before he invented the light bulb!

How long did that take him?

Consider how much you know now to what you knew 5 years ago.

At the end of the day, you must decide what is best for you, but I
agree that the fact that you have asked the question means that deep down you don't want to quit.

    Good luck!

Hi Everyone thanks very much for your input. In truth I really love IM and like some of you said I am not yet ready to quit that is why I am asking for unbiased opinions.

Some of you asked what I have been doing these past five years truthfully a major part of that time was spent just like FlashMatrix said learning as much as is possible about IM. Then I figured out that I need to focus on just one or a few things that I am good at or having any kind of success with and that is the stage I am at now.

It is in truth slow going and sometimes I wonder if IM may just be something I love but is now really for me.

With the responses I got here I am beginning to feel better about going forward I had made a decision that I would give myself one more year working at my IM business at full pace then based on the results I would make a decision as to whether I continue or not.

Thanks Yvonne for the reminder about Edison.

Lexxmarzain I have been thinking about blogging both about the knowledge I gained these past five years as well as my progress over the next year so your advise about blogging is timely and welcomed.

Thanks to all of you who responded for giving me much food for thought. This has gives me some sense of purpose moving forward.

    Focus has been my issue...

Now I VERY new to IM... under 120 days, but I fell into quite a few "newbie traps" and began to recognize it when it started hitting my bank account! Cured me right away and forced me to focus my efforts.

This may not be related to what you are facing at all! But it is food for thought...

Just think... with just a couple of minor modifications you can change your path DRAMATICALLY! Perhaps the membership in this forum is just what you have been needing all along...

Hang in there... don't dump your *investment* just yet!!!

    HTH...

    Hi LP,

It could be that you have been too attached to too few products (I've been there - associated my overall success with the success of one product) or too many to develop expertise and an expert platform from which to progress.

Don't forget, many major success stories have taken longer than 5 years!

    Hi Lylette
Five years does seem like a long time,I agree with what Jim, Marc and a few others have said on this matter.
Having the right mindset is crucial, as is acting on the right information. I would have thought after 5 years your knowledge would be second to none in the niches you are in.
I am often being reminded that in Internet Marketing you have to fail in order to succeed...so it is good to fail as quick as possible. and I am sure we all have failed at some point.

I came across this little gem a while back, and although it is not aimed at your situation, it can be a bit of a reality check for most of us.(I know I have been guilty of some of these)

    1. you spend too much time looking for a magical solution to make money.....Instead of pushing the magical solution (AKA a CPA offer) to your readers.

Newsflash. Anyone who has a method making $1000 a day is not going to sell it for $7.

    2. You spend too much time reading emails, posts on the WF and not enough doing work. This is one of the biggest mistakes people make.

    Do you recognise this?

Got up at 10AM, made some calls. Wrote ONE article. had lunch. Did some backlinks and some RSS feeds. Went for Dinner. Whew... that was a long day. Went and watched TV. Made jack shit. Complained to my wife/Husband/Partner/Dog/ Priest about how hard it is to make money online.

    3. You have fallen in love with one product that isnt converting. You spend days, weeks, months even trying to get sales from it. you do everything and even perform voodoo to make it convert , but it doesn't...

Do not fall into this trap. If a product does not convert within 100-150 hops test your resource box, articles, landing page. Ask yourself this do you want to make money or make nice sites. If its the second go away and find something else to do.

If it still does not convert throw it out and move onto something else quick.

    4. I love this one... you won't.

You spend all day writing articles. your fingers feel like they are gonna fall off and your eyes are going all blearly. If you type any faster you are gonna need to call the fire department to put out the fire on your keyboard... what is the problem here???

You are getting conversions but you are stuck. you have reached the point where you cannot do anymore. You need to outsource the writing. What is the freaking point writing all day when you could be looking for other niches, outsourcing the articles and doing other stuff.

Do not just rely on one source of income. You should be looking for multiple sources from multiple methods and have your own landing pages.

    5. You are sitting here reading this or when you should be making money.

Hang on in there, I am sure things will work out soon. Feel free to PM me at anytime.

Ive been online for about six years, only recently have I started to have success with my online activites, and I put it down to one thing I have found the Best Mentor in the world, in the few short months I have know him I have learn't more than I did in the last six years, I did have the opportunity to meet him, but unfortunately my husband was not well, I am hoping he will come back again soon, so I will have a chance to thank him personnally.

    Have a great day

Having put in 5 years, quitting would be saying that you have totally wasted those 5 years. Most marketers quit when they are just on the edge of success. If you have been reading all of the programs and e-books, perhaps now is the time to consider a mentor. An objective observer can often see the difference between what you think you are doing and what you are actually doing. It is often a very wide difference but we are too close to the problems to see the solutions clearly

Hi, Yvonne - I've thought about this a lot, because so many of us have been where you are.

This is what I blogged about some weeks ago:

A year ago we were all mesmerised by the achivements of Chesley Schullenberger who saved 150 lives when he landed his jet in the Hudson River.

    His typically modest statement?

“For 42 years,” he said, “I’ve been making small, regular deposits in this bank of experience, education and training. On January 15 the balance was sufficient to make a very large withdrawal.”

There are times when things go wrong – projects fail, products crash, systems burn, cash runs out – cash doesn’t even appear!

But the point, it seems to me is this: every apparent set-back on our internet marketing journey is a “small, regular, deposit” in life’s bank. And the time will come when you’re able to make that large withdrawal in the form of paychecks that accrue from when it all comes right.

My best to you – James

    Lylette-

    No way....NEVER, EVER give up!

You said it yourself that you really love IM...as many already mentioned, you just need some focus.

Dedicate some time this week to write out "your plan" for achieving success...define what that means to you. Unsubscribe to as many lists that you can and find one mentor that you resonate well with and feel can lead you to your desired success. If you are uncertain or don't have one, then let me know and I would be more than happy to tell you mine and why I think this person could help you.

Continue to believe in yourself...you can make it happen!

    Cheers!
    Doug

    Hello Lylette
You have come so far - a whole lot further than most people even think about. I would imagine that you've come too far down this road to really want to give up!!

You have a lot of support here and I would also expect questions would be answered and help available....Keep Going would be my thoughts..!
