Thumbs up Affiliate Marketing – Do You Focus On The Product Or The Market?

A lot of people go for finding a product first rather than a market, sure finding a good product is important, but if you focus on the market (niche) then you'll have a higher chance of success, because you really never know how long a product will be around or if your 'selling model' will even work to sell the product.

The only time you'd want to focus on a single product is if you are building a site based on that one product and focusing on getting ranked for that product. Again, you are limiting yourself... why not write honest reviews for several products in that market (niche) that way your site will appear more helpful and longer lasting.

The point is you have more options if you focus on a market rather than a single product, you'll last longer in the niche and have a higher chance of making a profit as most profitable niches have several good products when you combine CPA and affiliate commissions products.

Yes, in business, variety is important. People will keep coming back and will refer you to others when they see that they will have enormous benefits from you. Also, often it’s best to find more products in just one sitting. Less time, less hassles.

Good point, it's always good to 'batch' (do multiple at the same time) your projects.

Variety is important to an extent... having too many options will many times lead to people being indecisive (no action). Also you don't want to spread yourself too thin because you won't be able to put in enough effort to make the project successful.

Very good point. To me, this is one of the biggest mistakes that newbies make when starting out in Affiliate Marketing. It's become a sort of trend and I feel if we can all spread the word that finding a market first is the path to success and profitability it will destroy this wrong belief of finding a product first.

This thread has only 3 replies so far, but I just hope people are smart enough to check it out and see the value and importance of finding a profitable market first.

    Great post.

I like what people are saying, but it's not that you have to pick a specific angle to put all your focus on(product or market). You have to combine the two. Your focus should equally be on both. You can do it from either angle. If you find a great product, figure out what the market is and explode into it. If you find a hungry market then dig into it and THEN focus on finding a suitable product.

It's not finding a good market OR a good product. It's brining together a perfect match between product and market. Hope this helps!

I like the posts. There are many philosophies out there and each works for certain individuals. I try to look over the offers by groups and start some research on the group as a whole. This allows me to start general and whittle it down to the more specific. I stop before it becomes TOO specific (i.e. limits me to a single product in the group). If I can find a hungry enough market and a couple products to market within that group, I have an escape hatch if a specific product isn't working and can plug another related product into the void. After all, I've already done the keyword research, SEO, list building etc for the group as a whole so I can plug in a different product while maintaining PageRank etc...

    Food for thought

I think the products mlm business is now obsolete, since the market is crowded. And the products are highly competitive, because we can shop to buy goods more cheaply.
But do think about the scale of the online marketing world? And now for people most in need of what is to facilitate and speed up their shopping online. One of the company and it has created. I think this is a great success, because it is brand new, and in particular to humans. What do you think about this?

I find a product that is in high demand. I currently sell Internet Education, then I find way to get massive amount of targeted web traffic. It's really that easy, it just takes time.

    Hi,

There are a few ineresting points here.

A few weeks ago I wrote a blog entry that outlined the correct process to affiliate marketing and I think it ties in with what has been mentioned already.

I outlined the process as follows:

    1. Find a problem that people have (market)
    2. Find a product that solves that problem (product- Obviously!

    )
    3. Become an affiliate for that product
    4. Build a website (easy to do now with free software)
    5. Get a lot of relevant traffic to your website (people who want what you are promoting)
    6. Give your visitors free & relevant stuff, ebooks etc. in exchange for their email address
    7. Advertise to them through emails

I made a mistake when I first started in IM a few years ago - i started with a product, that although great, no one really wanted! And it cost me more than a few thousadn Dollars to realise this!

    Hope this has helped

    Dan

You have to decide what kind of affiliate products you want to promote. Maybe you’ll want to promote something that interests you or simply something that pays well. You can promote almost anything; the quantity of affiliate programs on the internet is increasing rapidly.
When you decide what niche you want to be involved in and what kind of products you want to promote, then it’s time to find the affiliate programs that have a quality product and a good compensation plan. The best places to start are Clickbank (the best place for digital information products), Amazon(for physical products) and MarketHealth(for health products).

As I was Taught from my mentor, or rather i like to think of him as a friend.
I would like to think that depending on what niche you Are in, you would have to find a market for that (niche) then find a product for that (niche) then market to your list if you have one.

    Hi Radeon,

They're both important. But like I first found out a few years ago (at a cost of several thousand Dollars and months of work) - no matter now great your product is, if there is no market or 'demand' for it all your efforts promoting it will be completely wasted!

Find a niche first! Then find a good product to market to that niche.

I similar what people are telling, but it's not that you have to selection a particular angle to set all your focus on(product or market). You have to mix the two.

I started off (a long time ago now) by creating a truly wonderful product. It took me weeks and weeks of hard work to create it and then ................ nobody wanted it!!!
Now I always find the market then the product. It saves a lot of heartbreaks.
There΄s a right way and a wrong way to do CPA.

Yes Mike, markets and products are strongly interrelated. It's just
the logic that's required in ordering the thought and consequently
    the action.

However, I would prefer focusing on the 'human' side first, though
it's more probable than not that sometimes you would stumble upon
a product that you like to the extent that you decide to look for the
    relevant niche for it.

You might very well have had little or no information about it.

To me first its the product. If your product has not that much response from the market or consumers ,you wont be able to make a good amount of money.Selecting a product wisely is the primary requirement If you want success in affiliate marketing.

If I get an email from my affiliate manager with a potentially good product that pays well then I'll research the market to see if :

    1) People are looking for it already
    2) Are people buying it
    3) How competitive the price is to the customer

Then I'll work out if I can target the market and bring them together. for me its about business and putting food on the table.
As long as it's a good, fair and honest product ( in my opinion ) and people wan't it
and if I think I can do a good promotion and get traffic to it, I'll do it!
If I find the market interesting too then that's a bonus. :-)
