u can't deny that using social media and web2.0 is another way of generating free traffic as well as plugging in useful links to ppl so that they might purchase something. but it has become overcrowded with too many hard-sells nowadays that the personal relationship building aren't there anymore.

i still prefer ppl engaging in a real communication that adds value!

You have found that here more-so than in any other forum.

Considering the fact that this forum has so many posts in the last two months and many of the posts showing up as part of search results for content and keyword terms the Alexa rating has not decreased[a good thing]as much as I would expect.Nor has the total membership count increased as much as I would have expected.I could be mistaken.Many of the posts are showing up on other social media sites for sure.Signatures are appearing as back links .Posts are showing up as comments to articles on other blogs.
Are there any suggestions as to how the main forum topic lists can have subcategories for thread types without being distracted by large numbers of thread choices ?
What I am driving at is the fact that new threads are constantly evolving and rightly so but that puts older threads on the backburner for new arrivals who might have a great deal of contributions still to make to those threads but do not do so because they figure the thread is basically dead and don't bother.Reading old threads can be very informative but may never see the light of day buried in the dead letter parts of the forum.It seems such a waste of information that only shows as article references or archived searches on page 100 of the search engine results ,after a while.

Any way I've had a small look at social media and I'm not sure the amount of time involved is worth it unless you can automate it.

Social media is not just Facebook,MySpace or Twitter.All three can be used to build customer relationships without constant promoting.The other aspects of social media involve blogs forums,bookmarking sites like Stumbleupon and Mr.Wong,Hub pages,Squidoo Lenses and others.Using each wisely whether manually or automated can produce great results via backlinks and trackbacks.Using manual methods can produce the same results with less volume of posting than auto posting if the content of replies and comments is of better value.
That does not imply that every post or comment in a forum or blog nor every Hub page or Squidoo Lens needs to be 500 words long.Most "Sayings" and oft-quoted quotes are less than 100 words.The keywords are value and relevancy.

Not to undermine your post, but it wouldn't surprise me if this was just a PR stunt to bring in the punters. Certainly a sweet way to advertise your new "social media matrix" product...

That could very well be but I have seen cars as prizes among gurus challenging one another,before.One company back in the fifties had a car built entirely out of stainless steel as an offline competition for sales .Each year the top salesman was allowed to drive it for one year.The car is now in a museum after wearing out the motor with 2 million miles plus.Too bad cars cost so much.How about the first new millionaire created by this forum donates a car for a contest?

Thanks Garry - I just picked up on your reply to my message about the age gap. The article was interesting and it just shows that there is hope for me yet! I did think that it was a 'younger' person's game but I was obviously wrong. However, one thing about the article stood out for me - how on earth, when you are 18 years old can any girl have the time to send/receive 500 texts per day? Don't tell me that has replaced partying, hanging out with friends and generally having fun? Must be me, but texting definitely isn't my idea of having fun and I am 18 years plus, plus, but I have a lot more to do than spend my time sending hundreds of texts. I recently read that many youngsters are growing up without any real people handling/communications skills - I think this is a good example of why this is the case. Thank you for the article.

I remember a few years back, walking down a street in Kyoto. A group of about 6 Japanese girls, teenagers, walking along animated and jabbering away. Not to each other, but each on a cell phone!

I wondered how much time they spent that way and why they weren't talking with each other.

I think they all have a place and money is being made by and with them.

My personal experience is that, as mentioned by others, it is very time consuming to get it up and running. Once up and running you then have to spend more time to keep it up and running or employ others to do it for you.

Many move to auto pilot following etc by being sold the auto following type of scripts or software and therefore it is back to the people selling the tools to do the job (ye olde gold rush senario) that are making the money. Also, software is available (at a price) to enable the person being followed to see if they are being followed by a person or a piece of software.

If anyone knows of a piece of software that automatically buys your product please let me know.

I laughed when I read your post about the girls in Kyoto. Says it all doesn't it? Mind you it isn't really amusing because how are those who grow up minus basic comms skills going to become successful communicators later in life. Will they become successful team leaders, business managers or open, friendly colleagues in the workplace? How will they be able to teach their own children such life skills if they don't possess them themselves?

It's worth a ponder really - don't you think. By the way, I am not always full of doom and gloom but this is one of my pet subjects because I have spent a good deal or time working with schoolchildren, students, young business start ups etc. as a school mentor, jobs advisor, pr adviser, lecturer in communications skills and media subjects, as well as in other ways. I am sorry to say that whilst there are (thankfully) still many young people who are absolutely brilliant, I have observed that there is a growing number who simply do not seem to be capable of communicating well with their peergroup, far less adults. What are they going to do when it comes time to get a job?

There seems to be a massive increase of abuse of copyright right across the web.

I wonder how young people view us in the act of communicating in a forum.Aside from the base topic of internet marketing,they probably would consider our actions no different than theirs.Like all things young people do ,they go to extremes with messaging whether by phone or internet.One of mine will talk on the phone and text me on her cell to ask when I'll be back for supper.Or she'll text her friends to tell them she is on her way even though she had just 5 minutes earlier talked to them on the phone.But then again she is a social butterfly like her oldest sister.
I wouldn't woorry too much about the social skills of this generation.Texting has become a status symbol.

Myspace, Facebook & Youtube are really great for marketing. However, many people are doing it the conventional way, which is too slow. I created a few groups on Facebook called ''Make Your Business a Success'' & several others.

What I have noticed with this adding people then market to them is that it is very slow & for the amount of time it takes, one can argue that it's not worth the time. I have made about £200 from members of my group, however why I still do it is because of the lifetime customer value of the customer.

Most of this customers are tied to a member site so they will continue be making money.

Youtube - Blackhat ringtone offers
twitter - ANYTHING!!! =]
Facebook - Links within certain facebook groups
Myspace - $$$$$ bling bling

Out of all 4 I listed above, myspace is by far the EASIEST money source on the internet for quick cash. Twitter is very easy to market once you outsourced the work. You can market to certain niches, and there are also various ways in which you can market twitter and monetize the system.

Youtube is also another great source of targeted traffic. Usually you will need to sort of "SEO" your youtube videos by adding keywords and such. You can also blackhat your youtube views to gain higher rankings, fake your comments, ratings and get awards on youtube for your videos.

Facebook, you can create an app or simply post links on viral groups

I am surprised to learn that friendadders are still allowed to work on myspace since adderbot. These bots spam the network adding friends very quickly. Myspace users are so inundated with this and that offer that most offers are deleted on mass.

In addition, myspace flags accounts and delete all the blackhat accounts that flood the network with these offers. I have some myspace accounts that are music related (legitimate musicians) and every time I would try to send a bulletin to my friends about a show or new music, I would get a notice from myspace.

This is whitehat, original music to existing fan base so have abandoned myspace as I think this reaction is the result of all these friend adders and the like. I would proceed with caution - buyer beware!

Yeah, I agree that is not how i want to make money...ripping people off.

I have been ripped off (many times) and didn't like it at all.

It might be fast money, but I would rather have a long steady income, then have to jump form one scam tactic to the other.

I agree, it's funny how many people will pay $40/bottle for acai berry juice as a supposed quick way to lose weight. Generally, there's no short cuts in life - blackhat SEO leads to failure and expensive pills/juices is no quick-weight-loss formula.

Sensible eating, variety of fruits and vegetables and daily exercise is probably the only winning formula at least for long-term benefit.

Paul Potts did what most people are not privilege to do and that is enter an "idol contest" and have the exposure of millions of people on national TV before Simon Cowell. With this kind of exposure, no one needs affiliate links to sell anything.

I would say this is "free advertising" at its ultimate. That said, Paul definitely has a fantastic voice. He's another Luciano Pavarotti in the making or the second coming of him. It was indeed a pleasure listening to him, thanks for sharing.
