Nominated Post How to Use Your Subscriber List to Lower Your Alexa Ranking

I have been doing this for about a month, and my Alexa ranking has been dropping steadily.

Once a week I write, and post an article on my Blog, and then I send a broadcast to my list announcing the article and asking for their input (no sales pitch or links at all).

Caution - only do this once a week to prevent pissing off your list and getting a lot of unsubscribes.

Once a week has been working really well for me...make sure you write a good article that will answer questions your readers have been asking you.

This causes a big spike in my traffic, and declines as each day goes by, but it (the traffic spike) seems to also attract new traffic too.

This increase in traffic causes the Alexa ranking go down, also my opt-ins go up as well...building my list bigger for the next blast.

My Alexa was 264k yesterday when I did another article blast to my list (961 - 40% open rate) my Alexa for that day was 65k and now a day later my Alexa is 251k.

    So, did it work?

    I would say so!

I have been doing this for about a month, and I did not think to record my Alexa at the start because I was doing this to get more comment activity on my Blog (which is another great side effect), but then I noticed my Alexa going steadily down.

So, not only will you get more readership activity (comments) but you improve your Alexa ranking as well.

I know you think the traffic will drop off after a while...but my unique visitors (as recorded by Google analytics) has been steadily climbing too.

The morale to this story is don't worry about getting paid today from your traffic.

Just keep driving targeted traffic and increasing your search engine rankings using your list.

Then, later on when your organic rankings are getting you on page one you will see the money for all your work...for a long time to come.

Plus you will build a great relationship with your list, they will love you for not always trying to sell to them too.

I hope this works as well for you as it has been for me...

    Now take action!

Scott, this is some excellent advice. I really have no list at this time, but that is where my focus is now thanks to some hints from Kevin and others on the forum. I do know that when I post new photos on my site and let my friends on several photo social networks I belong to, my results have been the same, just not at the numbers you have experienced.
One other thing I have noticed is that it seems to me it would most always be better to have your newsletter link to your site in order to improve statistics, especially to read the whole post. Could you, or someone else possibly discuss the negatives of that thinking if there is any?
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, now if I can just get my list built up, I will have it made.
    Wishing you success!

The only link in my newsletter is one pointing to my newest article, but there are no affiliate links in the newsletter.

The idea is to give your list free information without asking them to buy anything, and in return...they give you traffic which will increase your sites search engine ranking.

    Hey Scott,

    What a bloody good idea!!

I keep thinking what I should write on autoresponder messages to my list when I could easily do a broadcast and tell them that I've just got a new blog post up!!

This way I can keep a relationship with them and still provide some good contents.

Thanks for sharing that Scott, it's a great idea. It's a great way to build a relationship with your customers so they don't feel like your trying to get them to buy from you all the time.

Default How does this work...well here's some proof

I have taken a screen shot from my Google Analytics account (give it a few seconds to load) for the past 30 days using my method.

As you can see every week when I sent my newsletter broadcast my traffic spiked.

To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

You"ll notice that on Sept 28 the traffic spike was kind of wierd.

That's because I screwed up and accidentally sent it only 5 days after the last one was sent on Sept 23.

I was intending to set it to send on the Sept 30th but didn't check the right button in Get Response so off it went 2 days early..Oops!

This really does increase your traffic, and my Alexa ranking as of today is 226,949 and it keeps steadily dropping as my opt-in list steadily grows...win-win situation!

PS this is all free traffic from article marketing and organic search traffic. I have not spent one penny on PPC yet.

I'm interested to hear what benefits you feel you would achieve by increasing your Alexa rankings

    cheers,
    Eric G.
    Hi Eric,

Okay I will give it a shot...

Actually I should have titled this thread increasing your traffic.

But I got excited when I saw my Alexa ranking starting to drop after have been stuck at the mid 300 thousand range for months.

    Increased search engine ranking.

Plus when you have a decent Alexa ranking (the lower the better) other sites in your niche will feel better about linking to your site, as well.

    I know I would.

And that will improve your page rank which is also a good thing, right?

Plus I am not only increasing my Alexa ranking I am also increasing daily unique traffic as well as opt-ins...all with free traffic.

Are there any non-benefits to getting a better Alexa ranking?

I don't think so...Alexa is a popularity ranking meaning that people on the internet find your site interesting and relevant.

And Google (and other search engines) loves that, they want to send their customers to relevant and interesting sites...not sales pages.

I wish it would improve my page rank but that means links, and like I said...hopefully with a decent Alexa ranking I will attract other people in my Niche to link with me.

My blog is only 6 months old and I am real close to breaking the 200k barrier all with free traffic (articles and organic)...my goal is to get into the top 100,000 sites in the world.

Like this forum is with an Alexa ranking of 46,815

Google has an Alexa ranking of one...can't beat that I'm afraid.

    I hope this helped!

    is 175k again great stuff.

And all I do is write a blog on a daily basis, try and do it well, auto upload to my twitter account and then article market, social book mark. I was only looking this morning at the blog to see I nearly have 30,000 back links and am now on page 3 of Google for Make Money Online.

My aim is to get to page 2 by Christmas and page one early in the new year and all with the stuff we teach on this academy nothing more nothing less and for a massively competitive keyword phrase.

I am with you Scott....worth see your site on Alexa just to get the juice, to focus and keep driving the IM strategies we all know work so well.

By the way if you check out either of these sites, to see what I'm talking about, PLEASE DO NOT FEEL YOU HAVE TO SIGN Up. Paul and I try really hard to separate our clear marketing strategies when we are helping all your guys.

And that big ugly mug pic at the top of every page of this forum, should be enough for us as a pointer.

Yeah, the real benefit of broadcasting isn't to lower alexa ratings, but to get increased traffic.

I wrote a post a while back about Alexa ratings and why they are pretty meaningless...I can skew my alex rating by simply downloading the Alexa toolbar on my two computers and visiting my site on a daily basis. Google certainly doesn't consider the Alexa rating to rank sites, so really bragging rights is all it's good for. And even they are questionnable given the biasing towards certain techie sectors (ie. to those people who are more likely to install the toolbar) and the relatively small sample of the internet that have the alexa toolbar downloaded.

Google certainly doesn't consider the Alexa rating to rank sites, so really bragging rights is all it's good for.
But Google does like back links, and another website owner is more likely to link to a site with a good Alexa ranking then one without a good ranking.

I know I would, and the more "good" back links you get...the better PR you will achieve...so Alexa does play a part in your SEO.

I was just curious about how my Alexa started dropping so quickly when it didn't move for the longest time, and since my Alexa dropped my traffic has doubled...even when I don't send a broadcast.

And I haven't spent a penny on PPC yet.

Your Alexa ranking might not "make" or "break" your business...but every little bit helps, right?

    Just my opinion anyways.
