It would be very difficult to have a software submit your press releases because each website you submit to has different requirements, i.e.; hyper links within text with an anchor link: Some do not allow ANY. Some allow one, some allow up to 10, etc. You want as many of these as you can get but you will be rejected if you assume they all accept 10. Some reject your url in the body. Some require it. Some require complete contact info in the body and some have a special area to put it and reject the ones with contact info in the press release, and on and on. You have to read each submission and follow their rules. Also, signups are different sometimes on various sites and many times you have to prove you are a person and NOT a software. It is just a little time consuming submitting time releases simply because you have to read the rules of each one but after you become familiar with the various changes per website, it becomes a bit easier. Good luck. It is a good way to increase your website's backlinks, website traffic and increase your website's importance within a few days.

Thanks for the explanation -- I can see how complicated it can be. I guess I'll just need to hunker down and learn how to do it the right way! Perhaps I'll be famous by Friday!!

PR is an important and powerful way to drive traffic and get back links.

I use about 150 directories of which only one - the most important - is a paid for service (

to handle all my PR campaigns.

Like directories, create a 1 page PR release and submit it, including the usual bio link. They often get picked up and synidicated and are definitely something you should be including in your SEO Marketing strategies.

When launching a new website I have submitted a press release to PRWeb and have had good success with it. I acquired backlinks from this and continue to get traffic from them.
I notice Kevin and several others have mentioned submitting to many different press release directories - when you do this do you use the same press release for all the directories, or do you change the content a little for different directories?
    Thanks,

I submit articles to EzineArticles.com, where I discovered their press release service,
PressExposure.com. It's free. It will have to be approved, so make sure
    you write a good PR!

I have only gotten trickles of traffic from PR and articles
until I started using Traffic-Bug.com to bookmark them.
I highly recommend a bookmarking. It really works for me.

Depending on your niche, headline and article, just doing the
PR alone might be enough to get the traffic you want, and it
will be free. I've never paid some of the expensive PR guys
their $300 fee or whatever they want.

The SEO benefit and organic traffic can be huge, which
is what I mainly use it for...but I don't write too many articles
myself anymore because it's just too time consuming.
I let others write, then I just bookmark and send the RSS
    feeds out.

Best wishes on your PR. Hope this helps.

    Hi shermanf,

I use PRWeb.com, it is one you have to pay for - I used the cheaper option and it has worked great for me. They have a lot of information on their site on how to write a press release. Basically what we did is this:

    a) You need a catchy title - have your main keyword in the title
    b) Write a 2-4 sentence summary of what your press release is about.
    c) Dateline - in the dateline include your location, (PRWeb), and date - then we proceed with the body of the press release. The first paragraph or two should answer the who, when, why, what & how as it pertains to your website or whatever your press release is for and also contain your main keywords. Link to your website somewhere in the body.
    d) Last sentence should be a recap of what you are offering or what your website is about or offers. Add your url at the end.

We also did try a free press release site but did not have good luck with it. Others here have had good luck with free ones so am going to try some more of them.
    Good luck,
    Renae

MORE INFO: For everyone using press releases, we just cleaned up our list a bit (websites change and so create broken links) PLUS added some very high quality news websites for visitors to use, i.e.; google news, yahoo news, yahoo buzz, FOX news, NBC news, NY Times, WALL STREET and other high quality websites. You no longer have to hunt for these. The links go to the instructions to use them. GOOD LUCK with your press releases. Everything you need for submission is there for you to use.

If you find ANY broken links, PLEASE let us know. There are now over 400 websites on this list.

Need high quality free websites? Look at our updated list. Should have what you need. Yes, we double our website traffic just using the free ones although we have also used some of the paid ones just not at the same time.

I am going to start using press releases more often... but for anyone who is currently using them, where is your traffic coming from?

Apart of news sites like Google News, are you finding that most of the traffic from press releases are coming directly from the PR site itself, or is it the added SEO benefit that you see more traffic from?

What I mean is, some good press release sites will give your site good SEO backlinks and thus your site might rank higher. Or are people coming to your site from the PR site itself?

    Thanks,
    Joel
They are mainly for backlink generation, I believe. Traffic from them is pretty minimal in my experience.

Shermanf, sorry for the late reply, but bookmarking sites provide a link to your site.
socialmarker.com is free, but can become a bit tedious.
Sites like propeller.com and Digg can get your sites indexed within hours on Google.
Check our socialmarker.com and you'll get the idea.

I use one that costs $20/month called traffic-bug.com. It works great. It's a very good way to let the search engines know somebody actually found the content interesting, even if it's just you.

Just don't be too "salesy". Write a description from a 3rd party view and say what you liked about the article.

    Good luck.

    TerryKyle:

The traffic comes from MANY places depending on the exposure of the site you submit it to. There are a few which only place the press release on their websites but there are alot of them that make the 'news' (press release) available to national or international reporters who in turn place the information in newspapers, radio, magazines and even sometimes TV. Some sites have a email mailing they do to subscribers of their news. (Slashdot is one) so when you get traffic, people are coming due the content they have seen and should be unique visitors mostly. Also some of them post your information on news blogs (feeds) so press releases work really well. The hard part is finding something newsworthy to announce to the world as it should be no different than if you are reading a newspaper and remember it is always written in 3rd party as if about someone else even though you may own the business. NO SALES IS ALLOWED WITHIN PRESS RELEASES. Plus if you are lacking money, just submit to all the free places as that alone can help you. There are many, many of those. See the list at:

The Pr site needs also to be promoted to stay in the first page for your keyword.
You can link from articles to your pr , bookmark it in social sites, an promoted just like you do your site.

I have good results for Pr from webwire for several keywords my Pr is in the first page of google for the last three years

I have also used a program from incansoft called pressbot. They also give you for free from Dana Willhoit a guide to writing killer Press Releases in minutes, even if you've never written one before.

You get a jump in visitors from the Pr the first weeks.

I believe the link value and a second listing in the first page for your keyword are more valuable than everything else.
