Default How do you keep your focus?

It's always been a struggle for me to keep my focus on the things I do virtually. Often, I get distracted either from Facebook or from youtube or from friend's chats. I am a failure when it comes to time management. I need some tips and advice on how you overcome distractions or how you stay focused? Thank you.

A notepad and pen are my allies. I make a list of tasks to do for the following day. Then I cross them off as I do them. At the end of the day I can look back and see what I have achieved.
I use the same pad to make lists for the next few days so I don't have to remember what I want to do, and I can amend the lists as the day draws nearer.

Only check emails a couple of times a day.
Don't spend all day in this forum.
Schedule breaks as you need to be off the computer as well.
Try and do the hardest tasks when you know you're in an alert state of mind. Everyone has a different time of day that works best for them.

It can also be beneficial to make up a little sign with the word FOCUS on it and put it in front of you as a reminder.

    You are not alone.

I've seen myself get distracted by simply watching one youtube video, that spirals into about 100 more. (and the first one was to help me learn about internet marketing..so I thought it was permissable...wrong!)

I think it just comes down to making the decision and giving yourself permission to do just one thing at a time and one thing only.

When I want to focus, I make up my mind to not answer the phone, chats set to away, no facebook or youtube...

It was hard at first, but I told myself that it would all be there waiting for me when I was done focusing.

The payoff....I achieved my goal quicker, felt alot better, and focusing became addicting...

Even if focusing for 20min a day is the starting point....that's perfectly fine. As long as that 20min a day happends every single day.

As other memebers haver already commented, you need to make a plan and stick to it. Especially in IM, there are a gazillion distractions from e-mail scams, social media, phone ringing, etc. What works for me is I keep a list that I must do an accomplish as it pertains to my business.

X number of blog posts I submit to
X number of article submissions that I complete this week
X number of website directories that I will submit my site to this week
X number of niche directoreis that I will submit my site this week
X number of potnential website owners that I can approach for posible joint ventures?
X number of website pages that I will build this week?

In addition to wayne's response,I set a time for each task everyday with a software timer on my computer. This helps a lot specially when you're working with multiple projects.

    Hello Michael,

I recently read a book called Good to Great by Jim collins. Other than it being a great book to read for any person in business, there was one point that stuck with me...

Jim explored a concept he called 'the hedgehog concept'. Basically, this measured how much information you took on board AND how you filtered that information.

So the metaphor he uses is based on an age old anecdote about a cunning fox and a simple hedgehog.

The fox will continually weigh up the situation as he circles the hedgehog. Strategically, he will plot each and every move in order to close down on the hedgehog.
-- essentially, the fox will impulsively take advantage of the 'next big thing' as and when it comes.

The hedgehog however, will become aware of the fox and curl up into a ball. ALWAYS.
-- Every situation met with a fox will result in the same action because he's identified what it means to him.

I hope this little story is clear enough! To translate this to business, what Jim Collins is saying is that you should identify a principle within your business. Each and every time something new comes along you should run it along this principle of yours - a kind of mission statement if you will.

An example principle in internet marketing could be: "Do it ONLY if it raises conversions"

Good to great had a big impact on me, definitely recommend it

I agree with all of these tips, because I too was suffering from information overload. I started to do things a little different lately though, I started to write things down. Also I started to complete what I started. I am not all the way there yet, but good practice will get me there. I recommend that for you too! EUI---Educating, Understanding and Implementing.

After reading all your thoughts here, I have now decided to keep track of all the things I do and will do. I am now keeping a notebook of to do's. Thank you for all the inputs.

I suggest that you draw a work schedule that will always be in your sight as you work on your business. This will be a reminder of what you have to do on a daily basis.

It helps to tick what you have done. Prioritize the tasks on the order of their importance. So you should discipline yourself to follow the schedule. You will realize that after some few days, it will become easier to follow it.

Distractions are inevitable when you don't follow a written plan. The internet has got a lot of things that can easily grab your attention.
