I’m often astounded at the quality of the copy on websites and blogs - poor quality, that is.

Anybody who writes a blog regularly, particularly one that’s part of a marketing plan, is a publisher. And as publishers it’s our responsibility to treat our readers with the respect they deserve by producing well written content.

More important than any other skill.....

It is such a waste to develop a great idea and then not be able to express it in an understandable manner.....

I totally agree with both of you.
I am also very amazed when I suggest things to people that have site errors and they get abusive and don't bother to correct them.

Consider this........those folks that insist on presenting a garbage site are one less competition......

Let me emphasize that not all writers are copywriters.

Why? Good copywriting is based on persuasive writing and presenting your ideas in order to pre-sell to others. In fact, some good copywriters have horrible grammar and bad spelling even when their native language is English-- they do free writing on their ideas quickly first and then have others proof read or edit it.

A high school kid with basic writing skills can be trained to be a good copywriter if he learns about persuasive writing. Whereas someone with a Ph.D in English might not even be a good copywriter.

It's a lot of work, so that's why you outsource your salescopy freelance writers or take existing products with salescopy already written.

When it comes to writing as an Internet market, do not focus on perfect grammar or spelling...yet. Just type/write your ideas first and then edit later.

It's all about expressing your ideas first - bad grammar/spelling or not. My initial mistake was trying to correct my typo/spelling or fix my grammar, but those deterred my flow of thoughts.

There are always going to be 2 sides to this debate.
People who don't have the skill to write and proof well generally consider it to be less important than those who do have these skills.

It's up to individual belief as to what is right or right.... because you can't really say either story is wrong, (although admittedly I am biased towards one side).

I have to vote in favor of writing......
Consider this, there are all sorts of software available today. Most everything can be done with the push or two of buttons.
Writing is the exception....it is used in blogs, forums, site copy and many products....the alternative is to outsource.

Contract writers are not "you".....of course, that can be mitigated by the goal of your site....if it is a personal type site, only you can exhibit your personality in the writing....

I recently read that around 25% of people cannot bear to see errors in the written word, (whether copy writing or any other text). It's basically a personlity type. This would suggest that having a web page proof read is well worth the time and money.

(I once knew a man who would storm into shops and give them a piece of his mind if there were any grammar mistakes in their signs etc.) Sad, but true...

Copywriting is the most important skill and hardest for most people to learn...

When your pages convert the visitor to your desired action, you can spend more because you can make more for each visitor that comes to your site

I've become a great copywriter in about 6 months and it's all because I put in the time and effort - wrote sales copy and studied sales copy

Copywriting skills are extremely important.

The content I read on any website is like a person's resume. So good content is a major requirement.

I also get turned off reading content with lots of grammar or spelling errors. So proofreading and editing are extremely important as well.

That's why I've been outsourcing content writing. You can get someone to write very good content for you for just $5/hour. That gives me more time to find clients and customers than pop my brains out!

Copywriting is absolutely crucial to internet marketing success.

I still practice writing out successful ads in my own handwriting. This was a tip Gary Halbert gave.

Has the first paragraph been left incomplete (...with the ultimate intention of having the reader do what?)

Without taking anything away from the importance of the right type of copywriting (I do believe in this) I wonder if too much fuss is made about the whole issue.

I mean, you write from the heart, absolutely with total conviction; you use simple, concise language; you cater to what your targeted readers want: isn't that the essence of good copywriting? Is there any "technical" aspect to mastering good copywriting?

As much as I (used to) hate to admit it, writing compelling copy that reaches out from the screen, grabs the person by the shoulders and gives them a little shake is pretty much essential to success.

I say that I used to hate it because I always felt that persuading someone to buy a product by tapping into their emotions and calling them to action always seemed a little deceptive.

Long sales copy always got me hot under the collar - with all those hollow testimonials, impressive (and sometimes fake) screenshots of earnings, bullet points, emotive language - gah! It was just too much!

Then I got to studying some material from people like Gary Halbert, Paul Myers, Michel Fortin and Gary Bencivenga. They convinced me that if you want to be successful in sales then you have to appeal to peoples problems, empathise, offer a solution and then grab them with a call to action.

This had me really scratching my head - because it all seemed very deceptive. I guess I had read too many of the wrong sales pages and bought into too many of the wrong plans

Anyway, I slapped my forehead when I realised that all of these sales techniques are perfectly okay if you are selling a quality product to people who need it. The problem I was having was never about the techniques or the sales copy - it was me. I had become a cynic.

So I guess the moral of this story is... don't get bogged down with cynicism. Look at it from every angle and see if there's some good to extract from that which you have convinced yourself is bad...
