Thread: What do YOUR first blog posts look like?

I have been blogging for many many years now but the one thing I find hardest is the VERY FIRST POST on each blog site I create.

) which I will be using as a review type site where I will post unbiased messages about products I have actually purchased and tried, beta tested, received for free (in exchange for a testimonial or as a barter for some services I offer), etc.

Some will be good reviews and many will be negative reviews, but they will all be MY HONEST thoughts on the product/service I will be reviewing.

Does anyone have suggestions, tips, ideas, thoughts, etc... on what a first blog post should entail. When I first started blogging, I would make the first post pretty much an "about me" page and what the blog would be about, but since I have grown and realized that that's what the "About Me" page is for, I stopped doing that, LOL.

Should I simply start in with a review or should I post some type of message. I am embarrassed to even ask this, especially since I manage over a dozen blogs, LOL, but as I said, I always sit and struggle with the first post and most of the people here are just so helpful so I figured better to ask than spend 3 days trying to think of what I should post, LOL. (especially since in my experience, 3 days could net me close to $1,000 - $1500 in commissions depending on the product).

Any help or suggestions, as always, would be greatly appreciated guys.

Sounds great for an intro......

I go to your blog and know what is about from the start.....

I usually do a little "about me" and comment that I hope to make friends here and share great ideas and information. Usually I don;t know a forum well enough at the start to offer much more. But i am sure everyone is different.
I used to belong to numerous forums but got sick of most of them and so this is the main one I stick to because it seems to be the best imho.

Depending on the blog really. Personal stuff gets a back story with a bit of a how I got to where I am and just enough to get people who read it interested in the blog.
If its going to be part of a product release or a staging ground for some link juice I usually try and use the targeted keyword as my first post and hope its something you can work with.

Hey Jim, I ain't old, just getting WISER, LOL... Great point though, thanks. I did exactly as you suggested and merely explained what it would be about. Kinda got long winded, but have seen many longer starter posts so I assume all will be well, LOL. Soon enough people will have to go pages in to see it anyways, LOL.

Well i think that you can start in with creating the posts and categorize them later. if you are using wordpress, just hit those post. I will have an about me as well on there. but you should always have a intro to the blog site. maybe a video that references navigating through the site.

That all depends on what you plan on doing with your blog, and when... You see, usually, when I get an idea for a new site, I jump in feet first and worry about the details later, LOL. Since I am an impulsive domain buyer and am always coming up with new ideas, I usually find myself with loads of domains and no content ready, so, I set up a blog.

That blog could sit there for 2 days, or for 2 months, depending on how busy I am and how busy my team is...

Another determining factor may be how you wish to syndicate your site. Some syndications are done in reverse order, so your first post will always be the first message syndicators see or show.

Something else to consider is the search engines. When you set up a blog properly, WP will ping your URL to dozens of other sites and those sites will pick up your posts. I am not sure how you feel, but anything I can possibly get in the search engines, I want it to be just as good, or informational, as any other post I make.

There are many other factors, however, these are the issues I am usually faced with when deciding what to post as the first post.

Also, remember this: First Impressions Are Everything.

Unless you plan on posting dozens of posts each day, that one post could sit on your front page for days, weeks even. If you are trying to convey a specific image in your visitors minds, do you really want the first post people see is something like "Hi, welcome to my blog?" (which literally screams (1) brand new site (or blog at least) and (2) this site is not important enough for me to say anything of real value. Thank you for wasting your time by visiting.)

Of course not, you want every post to be just as informational and important as your latest posts, of course, getting better over time, but I am sure you get where I am going with this...

You also want to give your readers (especially if it is someone who knows nothing about you) a sense of what they can expect to find in the future... a reason for them to come back, if you will. If you leave a bland taste in their mouth right from the start, you can almost guarantee you won't see them again any time soon.

Well as of how i see things you have a good thing to start with the only thing is that you are a bit hesitant and want more second opinions.

Be careful in every tiny bits of your move but doing it a bit faster to minimize waste of time..Accuracy and effectivity is the key if you are aiming to have your works monetized...
