Default Picking the the right domain name for you website.

You want to start with a domain name that is your first step to creating a website. When picking the right domain name you want to be relevant to what you are promoting.

If you don't know what a domain name is that is your website address yourbusiness.com,.net, etc.. you usually leases it for a minimum of a year, but can do more if you choose.

You don't want a domain name about bicycle parts and you are promoting car parts that makes sense right.

4 easy tips when thinking of your domain name choice

    1. You want it to be short
    2. Make sure it is easy to remember for your customers
    3. Make it descriptive to your content.(a optimization technique)
    4. Try not using hyphens or numbers.

Keep these in mind and you are on your way to a successful domain name.

Also I want to mention register it privately so your information isn't at the whois database for everybody to use any way they want. If you don't know what the whois database is send me a pm and I will help you out.

The tips above apply mainly to a brandable domain name, right?

For pure SEO sites, I always try to find a .com, .net or .org domain that is an exact match for the keyword I'm trying to rank for, or as close to an exact match as possible.

I didn't mean to get in such conflict here, but we are in a forum and it happens. when you say brandable domain do you mean like a premium domain. I know you can brand your business look and make it yours.

These are all suggestions when picking a domain name. "I should of gave it a different title". You both are right it is hard to find a domain name with all these characteristics in one name.

You would have to buy a premium domain name that somebody has already invested in and it won't be cheap like you are used to with other domains.

I am not trying to say if you can't meet all those characteristics in your domain name you did something wrong and won't succeed.

For example keeping it short would be tough without being a premium domain
(A thesaurus can help you for words related to each other).

You always want to be descriptive that should be your easiest one,

Yes, hyphens can help break your domain name up to make it more readable and I have used them before in my keyword domains. The choice is yours.

I agree with most things on here but one thing that stands out to me is that you don't really need a domain that matches what you are doing.

Take a look at Google and type in a keyword and 9 times out of 10 the top site won't have a domain name that suits just one product.

i.e. i've seen website for a recent weight loss product and it was about weight loss so people were going out and buying domain names like: howcaniloseweightfastandeffective.com. now who in the right mind would type that into the search bar more than once????

Well, with exact match domain names, you aren't going for repeat visitors. You want people to find you in the search engines, hit your site and then either sign-up or click through to an offer.

That's why I think it's important to distinguish between SE sites and branding sites.

If you want to build a brand around yourself or your product, that's an entirely different game than if you just want to grab some search-engine traffic.

Just to add something ..info domain ranks very good too after what i have experienced. The normally costs less too.

For me the best domain names sum up what a website is about, clearly and concisely.

The trouble with choosing domain names is that you can come up with a lot of ideal names that are short and descriptive but then you find that they have already been taken.

Then you have to lengthen, add hyphens and possibly numbers to find something that is available.

    Sandy, try using domain samurai.

It's free and it basically does all that for you (add extensions and check availability etc.).

One of the best domain picker outer things (nice term I just invented :-) is

. You put your words into the search box and wait and it tells you which are available. if you click the mouse or hit enter you go to the main site which then shows you which domains with add on words and hyphens and such are available.

I was just using it this afternoon for a new client. it is a pretty cool tool. i like it becasue it is simple.

There are still a lot of domain names left with excelletn suffixes like shop, mart, site, tips, deal, discounts.

Like this: tennisracketdeals.com (just a made up name, it might be taken) but I have rarely been not able to find a domain when I have looked at names like that.

You are welcome. I have tried most of them, nameboy, dotster (Ithink) I had a couple that were desktop applications back in the day, but this one just works. Most of th etime anyway, if I try to look at 20 domain names in a one session it gets a bit cranky and I have to go top the main site and sort through all the auxiliary ideas, but most of the time, it works first time out of the box.

I would nowadays consider buying the domains to match the domain you pick like the upsells you get from the domain selling companies.

I have recently been checking into to buy other domains around my names that ive bought and found they are being bought behind my back like my wedigg site itsa .co.uk and a spin off from digg but now cause this site is popular i wanted to secure the .com a while back i cant cause some chinese guy has bought it.

so if you do find a good one im saying cover your back.

That makes sense to me, especially if you are branding your site. People can always find some way to get your name if they want but if you already have the net and org and info, it's a relatively small price to pay for a little peace of mind.

Indeed, for SEO it is the words that count - exact match or at least the main word. And hyphens, not overdone, are good.

For offline promotion (not the same thing as branding) the most important thing is making sure it won't easily be misspelled, which is not mentioned in the original list. For instance, don't include words that end in "ence" or "ance" (too easy to confuse) and don't include three "s"s in a row PassSomeMore.com . When in doubt, check Google to see how popular a misspelling is - and don't use any that are even remotely popular.

Then there is the matter of whether get a local or an international TLD, which I address here in detail:

This is true, the fact is that a few years ago when I bought one of many "make money online" programs and ideas, I tried a program which was based on buying misspelled version of very popular domains with affiliate programs attached and redirecting them to the real domain threw an affiliate link.
It works but it causes problems and many warnings from real owner, so I gave up on this as a "black-hat method".

I totally agree. Some sites have domains that do not relate to their target and yet google ranks them very high. Take kijiji for example, it has a PR 7 but it's name has nothing to do with classified ads or used items. So if you can get the traffic, then the domain like kijji is better than howcaniloseweightfastandeffective.com

Hi guys, here are some guidelines I tend to use whenever I want to register for a domain name. (might be repeats of others)

    1) .com is a priority - .net is for networks, .org is for organisations
    2) keywords you are ranking for in a title
    3) less than 4 words in domain name (so i kinda disagree with this forum's title
To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
    )
    4) If you can't get the name you want, try to rank for synonyms
    5) NO hypens (don't know why, my last teacher taught me that)

Seems to work for me pretty well.

Choosing a website brand is like getting married. That you are planning to need to stick with it till the bitter conclusion. Folks that use your website will appear to know it through the website title. Repeat readers will often simply sort in the site name to have towards the web site, greater identified as “type in traffic”.
