Question with or without hyphens for domain?

For seo purpose which would be better how-to-sumthingd0tcom or howtosomthingd0tcom?

    Thanks in advance.

personally I dislike _ and - in domain names.
I am not quite sure how the search engines read such things though.

You loose credit with google when you use -,_ or anything else in your domain. If you want to get the domain name with the keywords you want there are 5 words that google doesn't recognise when it comes to keyword. They are and, the, by,for,With. Just slot any of these words into your keywords and you have your keyword rich domain. You will never have trouble getting the domain you want

    Dashes do not hurt anything.....

With the long keyword phrase type URLs....they are easier for humans to read....

Lately I don't think it matters from this video that Matt Cutts did I think it also applies to the domain name as well

The most important issue is how user friendly is it. In the past dashes were a problem but now I suspect this is past tense.

I think boomer is right, it doesnt really make much different to teh search engines however might make it harder for humans to remember, and you want to choose the easiest for your users.

I use them when need to space words out like my being-pregnant web site

I have always known google looks as them as a space

Personally I think it's easier to remember without the dashes. Most people know that there aren't spaces in domain names, so when you're telling someone to check out 'blah blah blah dot com', they would (I'm sure) automatically type in blahblahblah.com.
As far as search engine I wouldn't be able to tell you.. I'm sure the Page title will help with that.

Ahhh...the age old argument of dashes or no dashes...

dashes wont hurt you a lick with seo...it will actually help you get a keyword rich domain that may already be taken without dashes...

The biggest con is they are not as easy to remember...

...which would only affect you in offline advertising. Most people online click links to get to websites rather than typing the name (unless it's something really general like cars, microsoft etc)

As posters above have said it really does not matter. However I have noticed that a competitor with the domain name without dashes (i.e. simplygreat.com) has stolen significant traffic from my hyphened domain (simply-great.com). Why because they remember the name but not the hyphen. Depends whether you are looking for return visitors or a promoting a quick fix sales page as to whether the hyphen matters.

    Regards

The domain name is only one factor in SEO and many times a zero factor in driving traffic.
You can drive traffic to any URL with the proper promotion and effort.....

I learned that it's ok to use! It's not a straight beautiful Url, but human can understand it. People use it maybe because the domain you might be looking for has being taken. (Thanks sucks sometime)
