Wow Martin! This is a great list! I could imagine that if you took this and expanded on each point, you could easily have a product that would sell for a reasonable fee!

Martin, I especially like your tip #21 - Diversify traffic sources - write for people, give good quality content that's useful to your consumers and then it doesn't matter about the search engine as much. Great tips, very useful and very practical too!

Certainly nice, useful and informative article. Try to build quality and relevant backlinks instead of building backlinks from too many low value sites. Build links smart instead of building them the hardway.

So much easier to take in information when its broken down like this and not so overwhelming. You can always go farther in depth from here but I'll stick with this since I'm still a learning newb

Great tips ! I think my biggest problem is patience. I'm not looking to make a gazillion dollars a month with SEO, but a little bit of extra pocket money goes a long way in my house!

that i found helpful. I thought i'd share it here with you all. It has 10 steps to ensure top rankings in search engines.

8. Make SEO-friendly URLs. Use keywords in your URLs and file names, such as yourdomain.com/red-widgets.html. Don’t overdo it, though. A file with 3+ hyphens tends to look spammy and users may be hesitant to click on it. Related bonus tip: Use hyphens in URLs and file names, not underscores. Hyphens are treated as a “space,” while underscores are not.

Good advice but many top ten sites (for big keywords) do not have keywords or keyphrases in thier domain name.

In addition, using hyphens (any hyphens - 1, 2 or 3) is useful for SEO but terrible for marketing. Nobody remembers hyphnes usually. Underscores? That's an even worse idea.

It try to make SEO friendly URLS. For example, I took GuitarLessons.Mobi though a lot of people don't like .mobi. I'd like to change FindFastWork.com but I don't want to lower my search engine ranking. Some of my other domains: DrumLessonBlog.com, BassLessonBlog.com, DrumLessonSite.com, BassLessonsSite.com are less SEO friendly though not totally SEO bad. However, I really like the names so I want to keep them.

11. Use a unique and relevant title and meta description on every page. The page title is the single most important on-page SEO factor. It’s rare to rank highly for a primary term (2-3 words) without that term being part of the page title. The meta description tag won’t help you rank, but it will often appear as the text snippet below your listing, so it should include the relevant keyword(s) and be written so as to encourage searchers to click on your listing. Related bonus tip: You can ignore the Keywords meta altogether if you’d like; it’s close to inconsequential. If you use it, put misspellings in there, and any related keywords that don’t appear on the page.

12. Write for users first. Google, Yahoo, etc., have pretty powerful bots crawling the web, but to my knowledge these bots have never bought anything online, signed up for a newsletter, or picked up the phone to call about your services. Humans do those things, so write your page copy with humans in mind. Yes, you need keywords in the text, but don’t stuff each page like a Thanksgiving turkey. Keep it readable.

Those are very good tips. The title is probably the most single important factor even more so than the domain name.

In addition, you shouldn't write for SEO but for people. Why? Because usually the anchor text pointing to your site is more (SEO wise) powerful your text anyways.

14. Use your keywords as anchor text when linking internally. Anchor text helps tells spiders what the linked-to page is about. Links that say “click here” do nothing for your search engine visibility.

This is probably more important than the title. But the sites must be linked from authority or semi-authority sites.

Those sites got to the top by becoming authority sites or the site owner is considered an authority on his own and his/her name in a domain name is sufficient to get all that traffic.

I agree but probably those sites still must have keyphrases or keywords in thier title.

People like Matt Garrett, Michel Fortin, Shoemoney, and Holly Mann don't need keywords in their site title.
