A fuller explanation is that yes it refers to Scooby Doo the cartoon dog but is rhyming slang for "clue" - hence "I haven't got a scooby" means "I haven't got a clue!!!

Hope this helps those across the sea!!

ps probably also why we shouldn't use it in copy as those across the sea may not have a scooby what we're on about!!!:r

    I did not know that.

Thus, I didn't have a scooby about not having a scooby...

Sandra, thank you for excellent explanation. While I did not have a scooby before, I have the clear and concise answer. And fair warning to all those across the sea, keep coming up with these gems and I will be forced to get out my "redneck" dictionary. Trust me, it will not be pretty.

Great way to stir things up. I didn't know what "scooby" was either, but as a true California Girl I guess every section of the globe has their own take on words, California included. Sometimes I wish I had a British "slang" dictionary, especially when Mr. Potts posts a reply. I love to read his terminology. I think it's a great thing. We all learn from each other. If I ever make it over to England, I'll use some of my new found words. I'm sure I'll stick out like a sore thumb, though. Cheers!

    Scooby Doo -> clue.

Not got a scooby = not got a clue!

Yeah, we have some weird slang over here, I know...!

Side note, the word "But" is slap bang in the middle of my squeeze page...Time for some editing I think!

Scooby is a dog - the legendary "scooby doo" - I didnt dare ask him why it should not be used in copy. But since I never have i am safe.
Ha ha - I was just teasing as it seemed such an amusing expression! ;)

LOL, I meant that I haven't a clue which word shouldn't be used in copy. Not that you shouldn't refer to the legendary scooby doo in your copy. :/

    Yip.

    Different language.
Words must mean different things over there.

George dubya kept saying he was proud to be "a merkin" , or at least thats what it sounded like, (hes got a bit of a funny accent...). It means a pubic hair wig over here. Strange bloke that dubya....

    So if you write

    It has some great benefits
    (a) it is this
    (b) it is that
    But unfortunately
    (c) It is the other.

Your mind is left with the impression that either (a) and (b) are either no longer true, or outweighed by the "other"
    A great post Mike!

I would just also add, using your example above, that the recency effect (given a list of items to remember, we tend to remember the last thing(s) ) might additionally compound the problem.

I will be double-checking my copy for that word anyway BUT not right away.

    Will

    It's a real killer word.

    Think about this.

    Usually something bad follows "but".

    Examples;
You're a doing well on this, but...
    You're a good person, but...
    I love you, but...

The more you think about it the clearer it becomes.

...and it has the effect of negating everything that you wrote before it.

For example, "You look great in that dress darling, but....." is perceived by your wife as "He hates this dress" - even before you get to the end of the sentence!

(Note to all men: NEVER EVER use the word "but" immediately after a compliment to your wife...!

Isn't it usually the wife that asks if her but(t) is too big?

No, I don't think he's been here all day.
I'm pretty sure he's over in one of the "I love my beautiful and perfect wife" threads with Kevin Potts and some other of the married gentlemen.

    Oh, you're welcome.
    Have a nice day.
