Thanks for that - should help me with my copywriting.

swipe files are always helpful (to get ideas)... Clayton Makepeace also has some great copywriting advice on his blog

I agree about the value of swipe files.

For instance...since I became an Internet Marketer and then went onto found the Cambridge Business Academy.....I have never, ever thrown away a single piece of direct mail that has come through the door....I keep them all in several physical swipe files. I review them occasionally, order them and always turn to them when I have a written piece of copy to brief on and consider doing myself.

A friend of mine who is probably the top copywriter in the UK and who works with me at the workshops Paul and I have taught at....swears by Swipe files....every time I hear him teach, he goes through detailed examples of the power and use of swipe files.

His lingering and sobering point is....don't collect them....use them....collecting is only step one of a two step process.

I have added these to my other files, but as Kevin says, I need to actually use them ;)

Most of the things I sell would sell worse with this type of marketing (cd's and books), but I like looking through them for ideas.

If anyone tries to sell cd's and books to you keep a copy of their sales material, be it paper based or electronic and add these to your swipe file.

Y<ou can also do an internet search for similar products to those you sell, find the sales pages and add these to your swipe file.

It never occurred to me to look for other "swipes" in my industry. I just had my mind closed since it didn't work the times I tried. Sometimes, when you are too close to the product, you can't see outside your own preconceived uses and purpose.

It's just a case of thinking what works for others should work for me too.

Instead of looking at what you are doing wrong look at what others are doing right.

Also looking at your competitors material you will also see what they are doing wrong too.

If you think of it as a race, to win all you need is to be slightly faster than the competition. So if you study their technique you can get a tip which improves your performance so you win. (in your case you make the sale)

I was talking to Jeff over the weekend and he told me that he typically spends 1 week - 40 hours just finding the headline..

That says so much Kevin, and I have know for so long how important a Headline is. The right headline alone sans the body copy can make millions. Some of the top 10 headlines of the past 60 years haven't been beaten in terms of sales generated. Remember the old Volkswagen campaign and that word they used, (spelled phonetically) Far-fig-newton or something like that. It exploded their sales, just that headline with that funny word in it. Amazing.

Thank you. Any help in this area is helpful...

First,mindset, who was it sent to? People already well disposed towards the sender. For example - the second letter recommending an investment... would get nowhere I think to an audience unknown to the sender.

Second, did it work? - One of the benefits of more expensive swipe, eg ted nicholas swipe book (several hundred $$$) is the performance of every letter is presented.

I have a swipe file and these will be a nice addition. I can use all the help I can get. Thanks for this resource.
