    Very useful link.

Two difficulties with a lot of swipe are mindset and provenance..

First, mindset, who was it sent to? People already well disposed towards the sender. For example - the second letter recommending an investment... would get nowhere I think to an audience unknown to the sender.

Second, did it work? - One of the benefits of more expensive swipe, eg ted nicholas swipe book (several hundred $$$) is the performance of every letter is presented.

That said, anything Clayton Makepeace recommends has to be good.

Mike, it is always recommended to save sales letters & create a swipe file but I always questioned it too. How do you know if that sales letter is/was successful or not? Andrew Reynolds did say something once that I guess makes sense... He said 'If you read a sales letter and by the end of it you have your credit card out ready to buy then that is a good successful sales letter'.

As a writer, I think this is very helpful! Sales copy is NOT my strong suite... my training and study has always been in journalism so I don't think as creatively as needed for copywriting. Great resource! Thanks, Reed!

Absolutely, and I keep all copy that gets me excited.

BUT big BUT - that assumes you have the mindset of your customer. Not neccesarily true.. What appeals to you, could miss customers completely.
So absolute figures are useful, and knowing who the copy was sent to, any former relationship they had with the sender , or lift letter author.

Very true & if you can get that sort of information with a sales letter then you are one step ahead. If you do go by gut feeling though then yes that will not necessarily work that well if your projects are things that don't interest you. But if you are launching products that you have an interest/passion about then you would probably have the same mindset of your customer. I think once we become more experienced in this business then we will learn to spot good copy, if not then we will have to visit Mr Lowe!

Even good copywriters are notoriously bad at picking which of a number of headlines will work best, and that as much as anything is a mindset issue.

    Hi Maria,

I remember Andrew saying this too, either at one of his bootcamps or in the COD series. I tend to agree wit that too. I also keep any sales letters which I find tempting....usually the only reason I don't follow through is because I am focussing on something else or I don't have the cash at the time.

Mike it seems to be that only copywriters actually assemble a Swipe File AND Use It.

My copywriter has this enormous swipe file and he starts every one of the jobs for our team by crawling through it looking for the juice jumps.

Just out of interest everyone...I was talking to Jeff over the weekend and he told me that he typically spends 1 week - 40 hours just finding the headline..

That my friends is why I am not a copywriter.....and the guy loves it!

Mind you that's why his letters can pull in £2million in one campaign.

    Hi,

I appreciate that a great copywriter is worth the money, but when starting out on a limited budget and working on your first project/product, this can well be beyond our means.

Would you recommend any other source until you have earned an income from your first project? I was thinking of

being quite a cost-effective method initially, and perhaps even later on too.

This is an awesome file and a great resource
for new copywriters. This is how I learned
    to write.

I'd take one letter a week and copy it down
by hand anytime I had a free moment.

Instead of watching TV I'd write and it
has had a tremendous impact on my
    learning curve.

    Thanks!!
