Great post. Power words can certainly mean the difference between a successful campaign and an unsuccessful campaign.

You can discover a whole new world when you pay attention to the words Politicians use every day to obtain their own agendas. For instance, we have gone to war over the use of three simple words: Axis of Evil.

Just three ordinary words, but when used together in a certain context gained the acceptance of the war on terrorism in the United states.

But why?

Well, Axis is a common connection between the enemy powers of World War II... Evil is the embodiment of good vs. evil... the struggle we all face. The word of joins the two in unison for a common identification.

So, when Bush aligned the terrorists with an Axis of Evil ... it brought to the minds of the people an era past that darkened our world, tells the struggle of good vs. evil, identifies the terrorists as the evil... and subconsciously identifies us as the good.

Still, we can find a more recent use of a power word in the political arena that brought change to the United States... Simply, the one word: Change.

This word was used in President Obama's election campaign. Every piece of brochure, television ad, sign, and so forth... (even his speaches) utilized the single word Change without the notion of 'what' would change. He left that to be decided in each individual's mind... but, any change from what was was good to many people... even if the change was not what they thought it to be.

For better or worse? Who knows... but, change was promised and change we got: a newly elected president.

That is another great use of Power Words at play ;-)

Okay. I suppose I should leave you with some solid examples that you can utilize in your own marketing?

How about some alternative power words for: Learn.

Using the word learn implies that you will teach me something... and for you to do that I must take the time to be taught. Yet, I want instant results. I do not have the time to 'learn' a new secret system... I just want you to reveal the tips to me so that I may go use them.

Use these power words instead of 'learn':
discover
acquire
digest
uncover
gain access to
obtain
secure
unearth
disrobe
expose
unveil
take in
observe
disclose
revealed to you
unmasked
spill the beans
let out the bag
laid on the table
made plain
and what else your imagination can brew

Go ahead and add this "power"
word to your arsenal...

"BECAUSE"

Would you like to know why?

BECAUSE it gives your message credibility (actual or presumed)...
BECAUSE it puts you in the power seat and gives you authority...
And just BECAUSE it works!

How many times did you ask your
parents for something, and they
simple said no?

You asked why not?

And they hit you with "because."

And that, my friend, was the end
of the story.

That used to burn me up when I was
younger. I knew their was no
negotiating.

I use it on my own kids and it works
like magic.

I sprinkle it in my copy and again, it
works like magic...

Why you ask?

Do you use any particular software for writing your articles? Or just standard stuff like Word or OpenOffice?

And the same question (i.e. any particular software) regarding using your list of power words to create something like a squeezepage?

Hey Mike F.

To answer your question about whether or not I use software to create my articles is nothing other than OpenOffice.

I don't use MS Word because I'm hooked on OpenOffice. If I'm writing a report, I can easily turn it into a PDF using OpenOffice.

For squeeze pages and sales letters I use the HTML Editor SeaMonkey from FireFox.

I keep notepad up with my list of powerwords to make sure I add them in my writing...

I have a book of synonyms, a book of quotes, and a book of phrases that I use as well.

You're just like Ian my technical director. He is in love with OpenOffice and runs a Mac Suite.

I run a Mac Suite and use Word for Mac, but it does occasional prove problematical when we are passing documents around from a formatting point of view.

But there is no doubt Open Office has a strong and growing following.
