Question FileZilla zip file upload disconnecting

    Hi

I am having a problem with uploading a zip file (130MB) containing flash videos to my host with FileZilla.

It keeps disconnecting before the upload is finished. It tells me that the upload will take 37 minutes. It does not disconnect at the same point each time I have tired it. I have tried it in passive mode and with passive mode unchecked as instructed by my host but it makes no difference.

    Any ideas anyone please?

FTP clients have a timer that does not like large uploads. However you can use cpanel import feature for a large zip file up to 850MB I think is the maximum for the timer. You can also upload smaller portions of the contents as zip files if as a whole they are not part of an installation program.Don't forget that computers are designed for fast downloads and relatively slow uploads.Servers are designed mainly for fast uploads and 'reasonably' fast downloads in contrast.

    Thanks for that.

I tried to "upload" the zip file from CPanel but it is restricted to
25 MB. Is "import" a different method? I can't see any other way of doing it.

I know a lot of people that have had problems with filezilla similar to that. What I use is a free firefox plugin called fireftp it works in the browser and I have had little problems with it. If you are using firefox you can go to the plugin page and find fireftp it is pretty easy to use and I upload large files frequently.

If you still are having problems it could be an issue with your Internet Service. Many services restrict upload speeds in order to conserve bandwidth and to discourage people from running servers from their homes. From what you tell us it sounds like the download is timing out. You can call them but I am not sure how much they can do for you. But try the fireftp program. If you are not using firefox, there is always cute ftp and I am sure, others.

    Thanks Dan,

I will look into that. I didn't know that Firefox had an ftp plug in.

If that doesn't work you can try uploading or importing the individual contents of your zip file ,zipping the contents into 25MB max sise.
Another method is to use "Splitter" which 'cuts' your file into designated chunks for importing and then re-assembles the chunks with a click of the mouse. No need to install a program on the server for re-assembly.

Create a folder on server; upload split file into it ;re-assemble.Can drag out of folder if necessary and delete now empty folder.

My technical colleauge Ian, who you may have seen on our Christmas video, always uses FileZilla and we upload some truly big files even when zipped and have never had the sort of file limit size restrictions mentioned.

Strange eh? What would that be Bill?

Sometimes a computers "write" speed for uploading is not synchronizing with the server whose self protection scripts may be doing simultaneous scanning for malware or looking fruitlessly for MSD checksums. But more than likely it is just a case of internet settings where the upload speeds are really slow and the server receiving the 'single'file expects a smoother flow of data and times itself out of the FTP connection.Every string of data sent between computers is sent as packets and slow transmission interrupts the flow since the packets in a large zip file may not send the add-on confirmation tidbit zeros and ones the server expects.
Sounds too complicated.Internet settings can be adjusted using the free program called TCP Optimizer. There are several with similar names but only TCPOptimizer works.

Hey folks, there is a setting in filezilla called send ftp keep alive command, its simple, in filezilla:

    1.Goto edit \ settings
    2. click on FTP
    3. set the mode to passive
    4. Tick the check box Send FTP Keep Alive Comments.

    This will work.

Also a tip on filezilla, when you have to upload a file again, when you copy the file instead of overwrite, say resume and it will resume from where it last left.

I have uploaded 300MB file before using FileZilla and it has no problem.

Could it be your server host?

Server hosts frequently have upload file size limits of8MB to 64MB.You can ask your server to increase that or change your php.ini configuration. The php.ini is not always easy to find or even non-existent.You can create your own new file and call it php.ini and edit it like any text file.Create it under public_html for a static site or in wp-includes for a blog.Add the following and you will be able to upload any size file and your other php files will give you less "ot of memory "errors: you do not need to include the php designation since it is an "ini" file looked at like a text file.

    PHP Code:
file_uploads OnWhether to allow HTTP file uploads
;upload_tmp_dir = ; temporary directory for HTTP uploaded files (will use system default if not specified)
upload_max_filesize 256M Maximum allowed size for uploaded files (fyiMB
Despite increasing mine from 32MB to 256MB my server now allows larger uploads than 256MB via cpanel.I'm sure the same applies for FTP.

Upload size restrictions serve no real purpose.Server memory usage and bandwidth usage have their place.
More often than not ,a faulty computer setting prevents proper functioning of any FTP program.
