    Reed,
I should have clarified, I am stopping promoting other affiliate products and networks to concentrate on my own products and creating my own network. It was late last night

I am not sure whether Google is after some niches but if they are, it's very bad. If you can't promote your affiliate product on your website, then you shouldn't be able to advertise it on adwords or any other means too. If and only if Google sees it as a spam / junk combination, what advertising at best stands for is paid spam and junk which generates billions of dollars. But this may not be true

But as I did some research, it started to become clear that Google is reinforcing the original idea that content is king. The fresher the content, better is your chance to stay afloat and higher your rank will be. Now, how many of us, affiliate marketers truly update our affiliate page regularly is something we all know.

Any idea whether rss feeds can help with this?

    Alevoor,

Whether your business is selling affiliate products, selling your own products or selling physical products...it is still a business and needs to be worked as such. You have to put the work into the site in order to rank well in Google. RSS feeds can help but you still need to add your own content to the site if you really want to please Google and rise in the SERPs again.
There is no subsititute for good ole fashioned work LOL Taking the easy way out all the time will not get you where you want to go. If you don't have time to devote to adding content then you will need to hire someone to do it for you if you are serious about wanting to make a decent amount of money from any website. Add content and then promote the content and you will be back on page one again.

You are right and I don't think there are two ways about this, particularly after this change to their algorithm. Probably form now on, backlinks are going to be weighed far lesser than fresh content which is what, in my opinion, Google is moving towards.

Another thing I could see in your response is it's still possible to get the same URL (and the whole website) back in Google SERPs. I wasn't actually clear about this even though it is only too logical to assume it. So, I guess, now there is no need for another site altogether.

    Alevoor,

It is possible, but not without a huge amount of work in this particular niche. If it were me, I would find a nice "safe" niche and give that a go. One that I know Google is not cracking down on. I know that it is hard for you to give up this niche because it sounds like it has paid well for you in the past, but think of it this way.....If it is going to take you hours and hours of work for many months in the hopes that it will get back to the top would your time be better spent developing a few niches that will require less work to get to the top and then have multiple streams of income that will prevent ALL of your income being taken away by the next Google change in algorithms? (and that is always going to happen)
That is only my opinion and how I would tackle the problem. Business on the internet is always changing and evolving and in order to make money you need to be able to change and adapt with it.

That's right Cathy. Business changes everywhere else too but on the internet you have got to be more careful if you want to avoid this kind of setbacks. I have learned a lesson but unfortunately the hard way.

As you said, it's very difficult to give up on the niche and particularly the website which I have worked for so long a time. I have already identified another niche in engineering which is my original education, although it is still going to be affiliate marketing. I guess, this is the area in which I have first hand experience and some kind of masterly knowledge. So, I can build content for this without even having to Google for anything. I hope this time round, things will be faster.

I still don't know what Google wants.

Last year, sometime in July I found out Google
didn't index my latest posts. It used to be within
10 minutes Google indexed it right away. I thought
it had something to do with my pinging plugin
because my site has never been upgraded.

So I tried Pingoat service --- it was only a matter
of minutes my latest post was indexed by Google.
The following day I checked my traffic at Google
Analytics and I found out my daily traffic (around
150-200 visitors) went down to less than 10. My
Adsense from $2 - $7 daily was down to 0.

I got hold of Jeff (WordPressMax.com), and he said
because I use Pingoat, Google has slapped my site
due to spamming. He said that I should not be using
any updating services outside WordPress --- because
WordPress has its own Updating Service.

My site has more than 100 pages and I stopped adding
contents to it. Since Google hated my site so I didn't
want to waste my time to rebuild my site by adding
    more contents.

And guess what? Since the late of November, Google
has started to send me visitors --- and now my Adsense
earning is increasing. My Weight Loss Category has more
    visitors than any other categories.

I don't know why Google has been sending me visitors to
my inactive site --- no fresh content added to it for about
6 months. . . Well, I do thank God for this!

What I've heard that Google "reads" also the visitor's behavior.
Maybe my site has relevancy to the visitors the way how they
    use the internet.

    I don't know what's in Google's brain.

Well, any specific reason? Regardless of it, it still takes lots of traffic to get started and going with it. If you noticed, it was the drop in ranking that hit me, in my case. Although I have checked the Google affiliate advertisers, it may really take me some time to get my mind fixed on them as there are no products in my current list of pursuit.

Btw, thanks for that suggestion. I will need to keep that in mind as I see an opportunity for future.

This could be the problem,Google hate affiliate links.
????????? That's a bold statement - given the number of affiliates out there who push their websites to SERPs 1 on Google. (I've even got a couple myself

Yes, it can't be that simple. Most of us, the affiliate marketers, ignore the importance of adding fresh content as we focus more on marketing through emailing, link building article marketing etc. And precisely this is the reason for this thread. My site, a content+affiliate marketing site, slipped from being on 2nd top to a now 750+ rank

    Hello all,

First of all, let me thank you all for your valuable suggestions which helped my site climb from 752 to 169 now on Google. So I felt deep inside of me to thank you all and update the current position.

Now, after Google slapped me, I planned to install WP (for obvious reasons) in the root folder which I tried and failed and reverted to original configuration (simple Dream Weaver pages).

I have had a strange problem installing wordpress for the first time through Fantastico suit. I am running a site (dreamweaver built) for over 2 years and it has 2 WP blogs connected to it.

    Troubles
    1. Fantastico refused to install unless public_html folder's content is removed, which I did after backing up for eventualities
    2. Installed WP in the plain folder which shows 404 page sometimes and unauthorised access (something like that) sometimes
    3. Restored my site back to the goodold DreamWeaver and called truce
    4. Don't know how to proceed but need to install this quickly

I know how easy it is to do it from within Fantastico but don't know how to resolve this tangle now.
    1. Should I keep the system files intact while removing content from public_html?
    2. what files should be left untouched (confusing as I have 100s of html/php files and countless folders)
    3. It may be simple for everyone of you, but can someone list out the necessary files to leave untouched for me, please?

    Thank you in advance.
    Special thanks to moderators

    Hi Alevoor,

You do not want to remove the public_html folder.
You should be able to install the WP with Fantastico but if you install it to the domain folder it will overwrite anything that is there. So if you want to save your dreamweaver site, you should install the WP into a directory. SO during the Fantastico installation, create a directory such as "blog" and install into it.

Do you host other domains in the same account or is this site the root directory?

    Cathy

In fact, I want my home page of the main site to be in WP format. I have /blog folders installed with WP which still leaves my simple html home page untouched.

I have no other domains. This site is the root directory

As you said, it overwrites the files within public_html and this is my worst fear. I want to give it a fresh try in the morning. I will get back with what happened in the morning. Nevertheless, one good thing is, in this last 2 months, my site has climbed from 758 - 169. So, I guess I could follow all your suggestions well

    Update...

Yesterday, I have reported this to my webhost and it looks like they are working on it. They have replied twice asking for something or the other. Till now, I have no solution.

In the meanwhile, I had posted this on another webmaster forum too. Although I triied all the suggestions (I swear, all of them appeared practical to me) I got there, nothing worked till now. psst... one of the suggestions included reporting the problem to my host!
