Unless you know what you are doing or know what every finding by the Registry Cleaner means ,then don't use one.Too many 'cleaners' go too far and Windows gets upset.
If you are not convinced and plan to use one then first make a System Restore Point on your own even if the cleaner offers to do one also. The only one I would trust ,after having used 8 others, is Registry Mechanic for your Windows version.Advance System Care and Uniblue [official site version link only] and Registry1stAid do a fair job as does Adaware's built in cleaner, but as I said, don't delete a finding unless you are sure what the entry is for.
Actually I would sooner recommend a good "Uninstaller" to replace the Windows uninstaller which does not remove all the registyr entries that were added when a program is installed including virus and trojan installations.

I have used uniblue free version it will identify all 'problems' with your registry but only clear the first 15 of them, so if your registry only has a few faults this may do the job for you.
But as Bill said take care when using a registry cleaner and make asystem point restore.

Thanks for the info guys I used uniblue's free scan but will have a look for a uninstaller instead.

Ccleaner is Da Bomb...
It's free, tells you what the item is and why you CAN clean it...
As a 20 year veteran of the Silicon Jungle (Tech Guy) I was adamantly opposed to such software. Then I tried Ccleaner - It works!
Of course YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary) but I have it on several systems. No issues at this time across XP, Vista (32 and 64) or Win7 (32 and 64).
Yes - the system is backed up EVERY TIME prior to a Ccleaner session. If you don't backup, you ARE crazy. Period.
That's my *opinion*... Hope it helps you out. There may be some useful info on one of my Blogs if you are interested in Tech Stuff....
